Default Need to re gear

Well I drove to albuquerque NM this last week and let me tell I need to re-gear. I have a six speed and lets just say 6th gear was worthless, 5th gear was mosty worthless but could use on a down hill slope I kept haveing to down shift to 4th to maintain 75mph on the freeway. I have 33 tires. I think I need to go to 4:56 gears. I looked at the chart and that gear looked good for 33 and 35. I would like to upgrade tires to 35 one day. Does any one know what a used set of gears would cost and why is it so expensive for installation. Gas milliage I do not realy care about but I was getting like 10.2 miles a gallon.

400 for both front and rear gears and install kit. It is a time intensive process to remove the old gears, then setup and install the new gears. Like the old saying goes...time is money! Yes your gas mileage will improve with the correct gearing. With the new sets of gears being so reseanable I would suggest going new rather than trying to go with used parts.

It depends, but the mileage probably will increase since you aren't lugging the engine or revving the rpm's as much to maintain speed.

You likely won't find many used sets of 'non-stock' gears out there. Head out to any of the 4x4 websites (northridge4x4's or anyone elses's) to get some prices for comparison.

and why is it so expensive for installation.
Most shops will charge 8-10 hours of labor. Shop rate x 8 or 10 adds up quick. (that factors in the possible need to pull the axle apart a few times to adjust and re-adjust. If they know what they are doing, it takes far less time, but they certainly won't refund the difference... )

Also, if you think you'll be going to 35's, I'd go ahead and consider 4.88's. You don't want to pay for the labor twice.

what stock gears are you running the 3.73 or the 4.10. if you plan on going to 35's i would suggest 5.13. if you dont care about gas

Personally I would stay away from used gears unless I knew their history or their owner.
Unlike factory gears they require a more attention during the break-in period and you don't want to have to pay for the labor twice.

Even with the manual I would go no lower than 4.88, but 5.13 would be better.

The $200 per axle deal from Northridge4x4 is good price.

I think you would like 4.88s better. 4.56s will be good but if you're going to regear, go all in. Plus if you decide to run 35s, you would be right on point with where you would want to be. 4.88s might be a bit tall for 33s though.

What effect will the 5.13's and 35's have on gas mileage? Just how bad would it be?
