Default D30 or D44 - The long debated discussion

I am trying to decide if I want to re-gear and add a locker to my D30 (I don't think I can att 4.88 gears without at least a new carrier in the front) on my 4 door X or if I should just accept the cost and replace with a D44. I upgraded to 35" tires and am running 3.21 gears. It runs ok, but I can't tow anymore and struggle a bit uphill at highway speeds. I run offroad some at Rausch Creek and the Pine Barrens so I need to consider the beating my D30 will take.

Any thoughts?

You don't require a D44 with 35's, but the upgrade from a D30 would certainly be desirable if you can afford it.

One thing to consider is that JK's Transfer Case can become the weakest link.

Unless you are doing frequent hard core wheelin', it is more of a budget decision.

You'll be fine with 35s, locker, and 4.88s as long as the skinny pedal is kept at bay.

I have a set of 5.13s just begging to be installed, I am waiting for my eaton e-locker (on order) and all of this is for my D30. If anything breaks I will be replacing it with a D60. Just my 2cents, I would pass on the D44 for more$ and get a D60.

$3000. New. Everybody is trying to find a used one. Though very few succeed in finding a much cheaper one.

PersonallyI i wouldn't waste the money on a 30 except to regear maybe, but still look for a 44. The ring gear just just too small. Like others ssaid though, easy on the skinny pedal and it will last.

With the stock 44's in a rubi how long would they last with 5:13's if C gussetted and sleaved running 37's. This is the question because 10k for 60s is a bit pricey for my meager military salary.

There was a Front D44 for a JK still in its crate from Mopar for Sale on Graigslist (Conn). Someone put it up on the Long Island Thread last week. The best thing is he was only looking to get $1000.
(From a Rubi.. 4.11's & e-lockers)
