Powder coat problems?
Bought a Poison Spyder evap can skid. The thing is incredibly stout and I was planning on installing it today but I'm having issues with the coating - supposed to be powdercoated.
It arrived with some small places bare: looks like the metal was too shiny to adhere to? There are also places where there are dings and scratches inside - likely where the poorly-packed loose parts smashed around in shipping. Poison Spyder was contacted and they said the coating is covered under the warranty. That's great but since it cost $99 to buy and $48 to ship... shipping it back to them, and back to me would be stupid. I'd rather have a discount for the warranty coverage that I will never use.
I live in a salty environment - on an Island in salt water, LOADS of winter road salt, and most of my wheeling is in clay mud that I know will be trapped in the skid.
SO - my plan was to spray the whole thing with bedliner, using a spray-on adhesion helper. BIG mistake! The adhesion agent dripped under the part and anywhere it pooled and dripped it ATE the 'powder coat' and turned it to rubber and it peels. I sprayed the top - not the bottom.
I thought I'd scuff the bare spots on the bottom up with a maroon scuff pad - the PAINT is scuffing just by scaring it with the pad. OMG I've had a harder time damaging the finish on the Jeep!
Anyway - before I just decide to sandblast the GD thing and put it on bare jut to punish it, anyone got any ideas?

Just noticed something - The whole thing seems to be painted in a rubber-like substance. I've seen powdercoat before and it is TOUGH. This crap is NOT powdercoat, or it's a bad batch, or didn't cure, or something went horribly wrong.
Whatever crap this evap skid is coated in can be scratched with a fingernail and removed with some effort - with a fingernail!
This is on the pieces I did NOT spray with the adhesion product.
Great looking skid - SH!TTY paint.

$99 to buy a 4 pound part and $48 to ship???
We see that kind of rape shipping to Canada but your address is in the lower 48.
Is that Because you asked for same day delivery?
If not what's the story.
Did you check out the Benchmark skid and associated shipping costs.
I'm wondering because I'd like to add a skid to protect what's left of my evap can.
I ride my fenceline daily and am getting dinged on a regular basis.

You must have read my location too quickly... PE, not PA. I'm on Prince Edward Island...
Looked at all the ones I could find on the web and liked this design better. All the US shipping costs to me were stupid but what do you do? I tried to get one fabbed locally but no one was interested an the price. Get raped by shipping or get raped by the stupid evap can location and keep buying new ones?
I'm very happy with the skid (based on looks only so far - we'll see if it actually fits later today). If not I'm sure there will be a post.
It's just the 'paint' that sucks balls. Right now I'm bedlining it so it'll have SOME chance of not rusting off before spring. lol

Actually I'm not sure my local dealergeniuses wouldn't deny me on a warranty claim if the fuel system was modified. They *did* tell me the windshield wasn't supposed to fold down after all.

OK brother I admit that I thought you were residing in Pennsylvania and not Prince Edward Island because our wonderful Liberal Dickhead politicians decided to change the provincial abreveations from (3) letter eg: 'PEI' to something that resembles the American (2) letter style such as 'PE'.
i am unsure of the powdercoating from psc but there parts are quality. i am not real sure any powdercoating done in mass production that is great. they just don't take the prep time they should. i have lod bumpers which are great but the powdercoating is not as good as it could be. if you want a great job get it raw and have it done by a local shop. with that said it is just to late for you to do.
so my recomendation is if you have a sandblaster blast the hell out of it. or if not just use some aircraft stripper sold at your local auto parts store and strip it down (shouldn't take long if you can use your fingernail). then sand it with some heavy grit and wipe it with a wax and grease remover. take a can of bedliner and spray it with about 3 coats waiting 5 min before each coat.
it is only a evap skid that you will pobabbly beat up anyway. and you will almost never see it. the jeep will be rusted out before that thicker metal rusts through.
