Default Got hit in rear.... New rear bumper?

On 2/20 I got hit in the rear (hold the jokes) by a car that hit a motorcycle that hit me while I was stopped at a red light. It messed the rear bumper up and they'll have to replace it. (along with the tail light and license plate and plate holder)

Here's my questions:
  • I've been saving for a rear bumper, is this the chance or is the only option to replace with the factory bumper?
  • If I had a custom bumper on there would insurance cover that or would they only cover factory parts?
  • If I had a DIY rear bumper what would the scenario be?

Just curious. I don't want to be dishonest or anything but certainly don't want to let an oppurtunity pass if it is one.

Here are links to the pics...

Thanks in advance...

The insurance company will give the a check for the damages. you can get what ever you want, but the check they give you will be for the amount to replace oem. From what I understand what ever is bolted to your vehicle (aftermarket products) insurance covers but you must have your receipts to prove price on item.

This varies between insurers, and possibly between states.
Some may be like that.
Others will cover up to a certain amount of aftermarket for no extra charge, some will add a little bit to the premium for aftermarket coverage.

I wonder if you get hit and you are going through the other persons insurance if they HAVE to pay for damaged modded parts?

As for replacing the OEM bumper, jonboy is correct. Take the check, fix the light and license plate and get an aftermarket bumper. Do it all yourself and save even more money since the ins. company will have to pay the installation fees as well. I would go one step further and make sure you take the JK to the dealer for a quote and if their quote comes back less, fight it...you know the dealer will ALWAYS be more...

Kollinsb I saw the Dickson TN tags and started looking through your pictures and thought that Black jeep looked familiar. I think we work in the same building.

You might want to check this link out if he still has it available.

Its hard to be sure, is there some bodywork required behind the plate holder? Or is there just the plastic damage.

What insurance will cover depends on who's at fault (did anyone receive a ticket?), what coverages you and they have (is anyone driving uninsured?), your insurance company's policy on after-market mod's (some are lenient, some aren't), and what your state laws are (is it a no fault state?). On the face of it, it seems as if the other guy's insurance will pay for total restoration of any damage to your vehicle. But, some have posted here on JK-Forum that in their state, when there are a series of cars (a pile-up), the assumption is that each driver was at fault, therefore every driver files against his own insurance.

Bottom line: Check with your insurance agent.
