Tire Size Question--AT vs MT
would the same size tire in an AT vs MT have the same look?
i'm looking at 315/75/16 terra grapplers, but wondering if the same 315/75/16 BFG MT KMs would have the same sidewall profile(plumpness as a friend of mine once said).
i know the treads look VERY different, but i'm curios about the sidewall.

its going to change from tire to tire. especially since 35's arnt really 35's and nothing is created equally.
but it should have nearly the same "plumpness" if they are the same load rating...

How wide were his rims? And what was the backspace?
Start with two of the exact same 35" tires:
One on a 7" wide rim with 6.25" backspace
One on a 10" wide rim with 3.75" backspace
Same tires, but very different looks...

ok--the tire is 315MM wide.
so by having a 10 inch rim would equal 254 MM(a little straight and square sidewall.
the 7 inch rim equals appx 178 MM which would pull the sidewall tighter to the rim giving a fatter look?
am i on the right path?

Using the exact same tire:
A narrow rim will pull the sidewalls in, creating a 'skinnier' look.
A wide rim will pull the sidewalls out, making the tires look fatter.
A higher backspace will pull the entire tire/wheel further inside the wheel well.
A lower backspace will push it out past the fender, making the tire more noticeable.
If you want your tires to have the same 'look' as his, you need to check and see what he is running...
Can't comment on how the different tires will compare, as they are all constructed differently. Your best bet would be to look through the Show Off threads or search for those specific tires and look at the pics.

Basically, all stock wheels have a BS of 6.25". This tucks the small stock tires back inside the wheel wells. As you decrease BS, the wheels/tires are pushed further out from the wheel well, so the tires will stick out past the fenders.
Most lift mfg's recommend a wheel backspace of 4.50 when running a 35x12.50 tire. This moves them out far enough that the taller/wider tires won't rub inside the wheel well.
(6.25 - 4.50 = 1.75 ... so in effect, they are recommending moving the entire wheel/tire 1.75" further out to clear a 35x12.50 tire...)
Rim width and lift height also figure into it, but that's the basics.
