Default MTC RECALL! Tire Safety Recall!!

Greetings,

Today I got this shocking letter from MTC posted all the way to me here in Dubai: Here is the content:

Dear Feri,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with cooper tire & rubber company, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in the tire(s) that you purchased listed bellow:

Dick cepek mud country
Dick cepek radial F-C II
MTC Baja ATZ
MTC Baja Claw
MTC Baja MTZ

Cooper tire & rubber company has determined that some of the tires may have been produced with non confirming belt wire stock. If placed into service, the subject tires may develop a belt seperation due to a reduced ability to prevent corrosion of the steel wires in instances where moisture reaches the steel belt possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.

To see if your tires are effected by the recall, you must check the DOT numbers on the sidewall of your tires. Here is an example of a DOT number 3D0DMA2336. The last 4 digits of the effected tires end in 3206 or 3306. If your tires end in these numbers, please contact customer service immediately. We will make arrangment to ship replacement tire(s) to you and collect the recalled tire(s)

Hmm I'm worried now and also scared I was doing 140KM today with these tires, imagine what could happen if.....

Have you checked your tire serial numbers to see if yours are even included in the recall? Sounds like just one bad batch.

Even if yours are in the recall, I wouldn't worry too much. From reading the letter, it looks like the steel cords weren't properly treated for corrosion resistance and if exposed may corrode and separate. If your tires aren't all cut up or worn so much that the steel cords are showing through you should be fine. That said, get them replaced under the recall if you can and you end up with some new rubber!

Interesting sidenote, I did not know that Cooper made Dick Cepek and Mickey Thompson tires. I had always wondered who made some of the offroad speciality tires...

What about the cost of re-balancing and -re-mounting?

Out of my 5 tires all are included in the defect list  and yes I asked same question to Copper... here is what I have paid :
  • Air shipping cost for 5 tires to dubai (1200$) via UPS
  • Custom duty 5% dubai airport 55$
  • Fitting and balancing 800AED ca. 217$

Total 1472$, I wouldn't mind if they send me those replacement also by air so I don't need to keep waiting, and have all these cost covered (customs and fitting).

Not only does Cooper make all of them, they own all of it. Both the wheel and the tire divisions.
