Just ordered a 2011 Unlimited earlier this week, and with out the jeep even being here yet, I already have the bug.

I am trying to weigh out Rubicon take-offs from Craigslist, or the 285/70/17 Duratrac tires for the stock x wheels. I understand the rubbing issues, spacers, bumbstop washers, etc with the sizing of Duratracs, but was looking from input from anyone who has considered this.

Things I'm thinking about are suspension warranty, road noise, longevity of tires... not how well either tire will perform in the mud. It will be a daily driver 50% city/hwy.

As a side note, I would keep the stock 17" tires and wheels for winter if i purchase Rubicon take offs.

Any help to make this decision easier is appreciated.

 

From a price standpoint, it's hard to beat Rubicon takeoffs. I got 5 wheels and tires with 60% + tread, for $400.

The nice thing about the Rubis for me is, it gives me a chance to test out gas mileage, noise, etc. with the larger, more-aggressive tire, so I can get a feel for what I want to do next. It was definitely worth $400 to me just for the experience/info.

You seem to already know this, but if you go with the 285 Duratracs, you're going to need ~$200 just for wheel spacers.

Also, I notice you say 'stock 17s' on your X....you don't have the 16" steelies?

 

i don't know, if it were me, i would get the 285's. if you don't, you'll always wish you had. at least, that's how it would have been for me

 

I am looking to go to 35's and I have bfg ko 285/70/17 now on factory 17's ,I like the tires I lifted my jk and now would like to go bigger. I have all five wheels with a thousand miles on them, no salt or off roading. Would like to get 1200.00 for all and would add 1.5 rc wheel spacers with wheels and tires.

 

If I could get the Rubis for $400, that would be a much easier decision. The only ones i found for sale around here are new take-offs for $1,000. I have the the stock 17' painted moabs on the X, not the steelies.

I am afraid I would regret the decision not to get the bigger tires. Definitly sold on the duratracs though from a leave them on all year standpoint instead of switching back and forth for summer and winter...

How much of the warranty do you think i need to be concerned with if I put on just spacers and no lift?

 

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the 17's from an X the same as the stock Rubi wheels? Did they change it for 2011?

 

Same wheel, just different finish/color. I'd go for the larger tires. Stock rubies are just that-stock!

 

Get the 285's.

 

Leaning towards the 285s... Now the hard part. Waiting for the Jeep to get here!
