Default Bestop Instatrunk or .............what???

hey all,

With spring just around the corner.....I am anxious to get my soft top on and be able to enjoy some nice topless days.

I want to be able to secure items in my trunk.....what do you recommend???

I dont want to spend a fortune but also still want the flexibility of transporting larger items when I need to .

Bestop Instantrunk seems like it would be a good solution but for larger items I think you are SOL. Anybody using this?

I guess there is also the Flexatrunk but that's close to $400.

Any other solutions out there? I have a 4dr.

I have the MOPAR Add-a-trunk in my unlimited. It is plastic and light and easy enough to remove when you want it out but still provides reasonable security. I leave it in all the time to hide what ever I may have in the back from view even with the top up. (It's not like you can really lock a soft top, the windows just zip out!) You could probably break into it but is would take a little while and the add-a-trunk will prevent a grab and run type of robbery. It's only a little more then $200 so you could definately save some money.

I built one with 3/4" plywood, covered with auto carpet looks and works great. I put it on top of the ledge using longer hardtop bolts so it holds tools in if I went belly up, and also makes for more space under, and easier for kids to reach stuff on top from backseat. Also put cargo nets on both sides Doesn't come out easily, but good theft protection.

For those of us who don't have the skills / time to build one, I would recommend the Tuffy JK Security Deck enclosure. It's a bit on the pricey side, but excellent quality. As soon as I get my tax return, that's one of several things I will be ordering from Dave at Northridge 4X4. Check out the Tuffy site.

Cheers!

Default Flexatrunk

Hey,

I live in San Diego... so as you can imagine my top is off most of the time. I have the besttop flexatrunk, your right that it was a tad expensive, but the advantage of it is that it has a 3 piece modular top. So you can basically remove them and get your trunk back if you need to haul anything. However the pieces are a hard plastic so if anyone 'really' wanted to get into your trunk, with a good screw driver and a little muscle I could probably get in it in less than 5 minutes.

But if your like me I dont often leave my jeep overnight anywhere really, if you knew jeep jk's you could take 3000$ worth of stuff off in less than an hour...and yes my tires all have key locks

tuffy securtity deck is the best option. the top deck also comes off very easy as well as the front pannel if you fold down the seats and need more length. great quality made in america and yes it is a bit expensive. i say buy nice once and forget the cheap stuff. i love mine and have had it for over a year now. you will use the deck to haul more stuff on the trail as well. works great for small grill and cooler.

Yea for the price I wish I would have gone with Tuffy Security deck, but I dont think it existed when I bought this a few years ago.. and if you say it did I'm gunna be really pissed haha.

The other disadvantage the flexatrunk has is that it is flush with my tailgate with no side rails, so when I set stuff on it, one good jolt and it could slide right out the back of the softtop lol.

I use the Bestop Instatrunk on my 2-door and I'm happy with it, but if I had a 4-door or didn't need the back seat in my 2-door, I'd get the Tuffy security deck.

This was my suggestion as well.

The building thing is a lot easier than you might think. All you need is a 3/4 sheet of plywood, a jigsaw with a wood blade, outdoor or automotive fabric, a box knife and a hand-powered staple gun (optional - 2 regular size hinges and screws). If you cut it right the top will go around the roll bar and sit up top. After its cut, pull the fabric tight and staple it to the wood all the way around. Trim off what's left over with a box knife. You can use the hinges as locks to hold the top to your tub by screwing them in to the wheel wells. If you pull it down firmly to screw them in, only two would be needed, but you could do four. Two makes for quicker removal.

Total cost for this project is about 3 hours of your time and <$65.
