Review: Black Diamond 3 Inch Install
Just wanted to post my experience with an install of a Black Diamond 3" lift.....first, I'll say I could not find a great deal of info regarding others experience with the product....my reason for choosing was based upon cost/value. The BD kit comes with shocks, adjustable front track bar and cam bolts....all for under $700. I read install instructions at several places and I purchased from 4wheelparts.
The kit box arrived damaged / repaired. The kit box with the adj track bar appeared to have bent and broken, and then was repaired with tape and card board. No biggie. I opened the box to confirm all was there. I started with the instructions. Here's where the challenge begins....many of the parts illustrated on the parts list were missing...to compound matters, many parts were included that were not on the parts list! The install instructions were VERY clear and easy to understand, however, they included a great deal of incorrect information.....for example...."remove and discard factory front compression stops"....
Well, problem is, the kit did not contain new stops! Also, a brace was included and designed to truss the rear track bar bracket...great part, but everything I read indicated that no welding would be required..(again, no biggie for me, as I have access to a welding rig, but this could be a show stopper for alot of folks)..
I called BD and spoke with Rodger...he was GREAT. He confirmed that all the parts were there as they should be...explained that the front stops were not required as aluminum stops were designed to work with the factory. He also confirmed that the weld on bracket was a necessity. He did state that they have a bolt on option, but it was over $100. I expressed my challenge, as what I purchased (the parts on my invoice) and what a received did not match.
We then discussed the install instructions. Long story short, the kit has changed some over the years and some of the info is not reflected in the install instructions. He told me if I had questions, ring back...
I began the job and it was pretty straight forward...the only issues I had were the parts list / instructions...also the kit included new, adjustable rear anti sway bar links.....the heim end on one of the links was threaded incorrectly and had to be re threaded.....also, per instructions you do have to cut away apx 3/8" of the frame cross member under the front drive shaft for clearance....and the welding of the bracket...the welding might prompt others to choose another vendor's kit...I personally think it is an asset, but others may not.
Job went well....the parts seemed quality....my only rub was the install instructions....let's face it, I would speculate that the majority of the folks who own JK's are in the "I'll do it myself" group....a good set of install instructions would be nice!
The Jeep is up well over 3"......new Black Rock Vipers and 35" Nitto Trail Grapplers.......tracks straight as an arrow down the road!
Shoot me a note if you are going to install this lift and I'll see if I can help you!
Peace and Goodwill folks! Merry Christmas!!!!!
The instructions indicate that "Prior to beginning the installation, check all parts and hardware in the box with the parts list below"

Pics! And yeah, I hate when install instructions arn't up to date, or helpful. I mean I know the vendors and manufacturers are always a phone call away, but come on, how hard is it to update the instructions! Enough of us do write ups for the installs, they might as well work with folks from the forums who do a write up, and then create a new set of directions
