Default How much back spacing is too little?

I was previously running 35x14.5 tires on 3.75" backspace wheels with no issues. I recently went to 38.5x15 tires and they rubbed on the frame rails when turning, so I went to longer steering stops. That fixed the rubbing, but my turning radius is unacceptable now. Im contemplating 1" spacers for a total of 2.75" backspace, but the only 1" spacers I see are Eibach, and they are pricey at $140 per set of two. I see Rough Country 1.5" spacers for $69 per set, but 2.25" backspace seems like I'm just asking for bearing failure. So how little of back spacing have forum members successfully ran without failures?

Thanks in advance!
