Default Why do states limit tire size?

With the invention of the superchip flashpaq and the ability to calibrate your speedo and grears, why do states still limit tire size? (within reason) So my factory Unlimited X tires were not much bigger than a lawn mower. 225/75/16 as it states on the door of my JK. The Rubicon for the same 2007 year comes with 255/75/17. With that said my state allows 2" larger than stock. I just went with 315/75/16. So that gets me a few inches over the 2" limit from my 225/75/16. However, if I had a Rubicon with 255's, I would be just over the 2" limit. I have used my flashpaq and changed the tire size to calibrate my speedo, etc. My new 35's do not extend beyond my fenders which is also a requirement for my state.

So with that said, what is the problem with me going to my 315/75/16's over the stock 225/65/16's? I have a 2.5" RC lift and have trussed, gusseted and added HD ball joints to the front and adjusted everything with my superchip. I feel that the JK either the Rubicon, X or Sahara are all on the same platform and the tire recommendations should technically be the same. What are you thoughts? Oh yeah, I can't move to another state so let's not be smart!

Pennsylvania says I drive a station wagon. find a Jeep shop that can help you with inspection regardless of the laws.

Mass has a lift and tire height law but no width law. Its a crazy formula based in vehicle legth. So basically is you drive limo you can have 100" tall tires!

I could see this years ago when you could not change your tire size for speedo and abs, but now it just doesnt make sense if my fenders cover the tread so they dont throw crap evey where going down the road.

Does anyone know why this makes a vehicle unsafe?

I am outraged ! Where are you at? On my old tj I ran w/o cats, 37s, no muffler ,no fenders , blinkers foged over , leaked all over the place , and head light wiring got fried so I just used my Hellas at night! O and tinted windows. Gotta love Michigan!
