Default Another Tire Thread - Help a guy decide on his next set of road/trail tires

Currently, I'm running 33" Falken Wildpeaks and have no complaints other than the fact they look more like street tires than off-road tires. They've not let me down on rocks, rain, ice or snow. But soon I'll be re-gearing and ready to move up to 35's so I can start running more challenging trails. I'd like some input from others so I can decide which route I'm going and then watch for sales.

I use this Jeep every day for work, and even though I am trying to get on the trails a little more these days, it's still a small percentage of the overall use of this rig. I'll also be towing my travel trailer with it a little more than I'm on the trails for another year or so. My dilemma is this: Do I stick with the A/T style or should I jump to a M/T (like Nitto or Toyo). I'm in California, so the type of trails I'm preparing to run are mostly rocks and gravel, the most notable being Rubicon and Dusy-Ershim. I see a lot more hard, wet, or icy surfaces than mud.

Please pitch in your

I'm partial to the Toyo mt or Nitto trail grapplers, but the Goodyear duratrac may also be a good option for you.

Running the Toyo terra grapplers and they have handled everything with ease. I run them 40+ miles a day up and down the highway and they handle perfectly. My tires are 34" and you would never know it. Also they have minimal road noise.

"Love, rocks, quieter, cheaper...." You forgot "true to size."

You'll find a lot of people are going to of course recommend whatever tire they run lol. I DD 50-60 miles a day on my KM2's with no complaints. Nice aggressive tread pattern, great offroad performance, light, and good tread life.

As for people screaming about how small they run, they measured 34.75 inches on the wheel when they were new (spec is 34.8). On the jeep they sit right around 34", pretty standard for 35's if you ask me

If my jeep was a DD I think I would go with an aggressive AT tire. My MT's Howel and they sound like aircraft taking off. I'm used to it but I usually don't drive faster than 60 mph and trips no longer than an hour.

I have run GY, Michelin, Pirelli and Nitto. The Nitto have been the best by far above the aforementioned. I had a Land Rover that just chewed off GYs inside of 25k miles. They were always needing rebalancing, uneven wear, etc. as they say, "Good for a Year". Michelins were good traction, too soft. Even the 4x4 model they had. Rode nice, quiet, but limited with off road traction. Pirelli sucked. Cold, flat spots, wandered, etc. I have run Nitto terra grapplers on my Landy which went about 80k before needing replacement. Not sidewall punctures when off road, wore evenly, quiet on the highway, descent off road traction (no mud, too tight of a tread pattern), no flat spots after sitting overnight in the cold, excellent snow traction, wet traction, etc. I now have Nitto Trail Grapplers. Excellent wear, better off road than the Terra's and the trade off is some hum on the highway above about 50 mph. Durable as the Terra's. been off road plenty, no flats, a few cuts, but still holding strong.

I guess what I'm trying to decide is to either stay with Falken Wildpeaks in a bigger size or switch to a more aggressive tire. As I mentioned, I've been happy with them but trail performance is something I wonder about as I start taking on tougher trails. Tread wear is also important, but traction has to be there too. If I can get decent dry/wet/icy performance from a M/T, then that's probably the route I'll take.
