Default Need help replacing my 2008 3.8!

I'm in the process of trying to replace my 3.8 because I'm a dumbass.

Dealership wanted $8000 to get a new long block and internals. I was able to rescue it from them after they wanted $2500 just for taking off the oil pan & telling me this. (I didnt pay that!)

Rebel has quoted me 1800 for a straight swap if I provide a motor. Or 3400 (parts only) to do the long block. Guess which I'm trying to do...

It looks like if I do this right I can find a used motor for $2k. I didnt have any luck calling AEV, no 3.8's available.
The Jeep Speed Shop in norcal hasnt called me back... & my local shops in Orange County (Offroad Evo & Rebel) don't have engines laying around.

Is LKQ a legit source for a motor? I just called & they have a "reman?" for $2100 with a 3yr warranty. They also had a used one with 32k mi for $2200.

I was a bit thrown off that they wanted my motor in return or an extra $250 if I dont send them it.

I know there are a lot of Socal people on here & I would love some help on this as I am without a vehicle & only half a clue on what I am doing.

Anyone have leads on engines laying around or shops that do hemi swaps & may have some? Willing to pay freight.

Sorry to hear.

Make sure if you buy a remanufactured engine that the warranty doesn't require installation by an "authorized shop".

I don't think the $250 core charge is unreasonable

good luck

Also, have you gotten another opinion about the motor really being blown?

If you don't mind me asking, how many miles did you have on motor and what caused it to go. I have a 2007 with 82000 and have no problems but I hear a lot about problems with the 3.8

Motech in Vegas does LS swaps, they may have some 3.8 motors. I would think they would give you a price on a swap as well.

I heard that the 3.8 is bullet proof, just sips on some oil is all. I hope mine lasts. It's only got 12,500 miles on it right now, but still.

Thats a good point about the installation. Something they may try to get me with later if I didnt ask. Yeah im not too worried about the $250 i guess.

Thanks for the lead on TurnKey. He wasnt willing to do the swap but said he would keep me in mind if someone came in with a 3.8 in the next few weeks. Didnt currently have any.

close to 80k. I ran it dry. It was running a bit hot with a dead water pump and probably ate oil a bit faster than usual but I just straight up neglected it. It sat on an incline running for about 6 minutes and the oil pickup didnt get anything in that time.

Thanks, I've now called them twice & left 2 voicemails. Didnt get an answer on the first one so im not hopeful about this second one.

Sounds like a perfect time for a LS swap or hemi if thats your taste i guess. Personally i could never ever see why you would want to put another 3.8 in. Go V8.
