2013 jk sport vs 2013 toyota tocoma
I have been wheeling with a Buddie who has a toy tac. And I'm very surprised at how great it gets around.
He actually does stuff that I can't seems to do. There was a steep climb with rock and some mud that I couldn't get up for the life of me and he made it up first try no prob
We both are running a/t tires, mine are nitto terras, his are hankook.
I was disconnected and slightly aired down.
Kinda scratching my head.....

I guess it's time to trade your JK for a Taco.
In all honesty, there's too many factors to consider. Tires, gearing, lockers, gear selection, driver skill, line, weight distribution, wheelbase, electronic nannies on/off.
Tacos are pretty long and fat, considering. Your JK should run circles around him on a tight and technical trail.

Presuming both have open diffs, I'd bet the taco's tires just bit in better. Maybe they were aired down more, were softer, or the tread was more suited to that terrain. As a side note, I've been using tires with the mountain snowflake (severe snow) rating for a while now, and I think they get a bit better traction on slick rocks and lite mud (in addition to snow packed highways). Maybe the Hankook's on the taco were severe snow rated?
Another explanation might relate to how well the part of electronic traction control that adds braking to a spinning wheel (with open diffs) worked -- Was there significant wheel spin on one side of an axle?
edit: According to the manual for mine (2008), the traction control feature that applies the brake to a control wheel spin across an axle is enabled all the time. Tacoma's have a similar feature.

Do you have any mods? I have a BB 2.5" on 35s terra graplers and I am pretty impressed. A tacoma is pretty capable but overall, I doubt its offroad capabilities are better than a wrangler sport

Were you in 4WD low? If not, did you manually turn off the ESP to full off by holding the ESP off button for five seconds? If not, suggest you read your owner's manual about that button. But, when your tires were slipping on the climb, your Jeep thought you were skidding and took over throttle control. Next time, just go to 4WD low and it will turn off automatically (you'll see the skidding car icon on the dash light up).
It was a steep Hill climb with dirt/rocks/roots. It was a little slick out. Since it had rained a couple days before.
I have a 2013 jk sport auto with 3:73 gearing with following mods: terra flex leveling kit & quick disconnects, 265/75/16 terra grapplers. Front bumper and rock rails.
I had the sway bar disconnected, tires were at about 30ish psi, I had it in 4wheel low, and had the auto slapped into 1st gear. I climb pretty slow and steady....
Maybe more speed?
Maybe it would have helped to have the trac control on? To help with wheel spin? So maybe 4w high?
Can you add trac control in 4wl?

I don't see why you are surprised. People have been wheeling Nissan and Toyota truck for years because they do great.
they usually have a better power to weight ratio. More horsepower more torque.
really the only advantage Jeep Wrangler has is the solid front axle and most trails that would only be a little more advantage. depending on the situation a longer or shorter wheelbase help you or hurt you.
