Default Oil Change

When did you get your first oil change? My 2014 is at 3k and reads oil life at like 65% life remaining. This goes against everything in me not to change it.

If it bugs you then change it. Modern motor oils are really qiite good and are very capable of going the distance stated in the owners manual. The notion that oil changes should be done every 3500 miles is a myth perpetrated by oil companies. Most auto manufacturers are going with 6000-7500 miles now.

I change mine every 5000. The last time I changed it I did not reset the oil change warning just to see how long it would take till it came on. It came on 4400 miles after the last change, so that makes it right at 9400 miles. I will probably still do mine ever 5000, but I won't be so worried about it if I have to run a little long on my change.

If it is the factory oil, change it. I ran 3K on the factory, 3K on the next change (with dino oil, bot synthetic) and then ran/run full synthetic whe it asks for it (which is about every 2500 miles - mine is used often off road). With the synthetic I run, I'll actually go two cycles before I chnage it, so about every 5K miles. The oil is good for 25K miles, but it is cheap insurance.

Get the factory oil out at 500 miles or so. Put in dino. At 3000 replace with more dino. At 5000-6000 switch to synthetic. Change it per the owner's manual/idiot light until the warranty is expired. After that, follow the oil manufacturer's recommendation. I really believe the spate of recent cars/Jeeps with oil burning problems (Subaru was just sued over this last week) is because folks are buying vehicles that are made to looser tolerances than more expensive vehicles, but are delivered with synthetic (or they choose to switch immediately to synthetics). An engine needs to be broken in on dino unless built to the tightest, most expensive standards. Most motors are not (IMHO).
