Default Neewbie Looking for Thoughts on a Lift Project

I have a stock 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport. I am thinking about a MOPAR 4" lift and 35 tires. Looking for thoughts from more experienced Jeepers on this set up, and would I need to change my gearing?

4" is a lot of lift for 35's, especially if you plan on flat fenders. I am not familiar with that specific lift, what components are included? Adjustable everything? Drag link flip? Front driveshaft?

You can get an equivalent lift for significantly less money if you go aftermarket. Just depends on your opinion of 'dealer warranty'...

What gears do you have now? Whether 'you' will want to regear will depend on what you have and your personal opinion on how it drives with the bigger tires.

4" is too much for 35's and you will have more issues to deal with at that height. I would go flat fenders and no lift or at the most 2.5

Thanks everyone for the info. It seems like I might want to come down in height a little or look at going with bigger tires. Just out of curiosity, if I stay with the stock fenders, what size tire would pair better with a four inch lift?

Many people think that a 2.5" lift works well with 35's, and 2.5" + flat fenders will fit 37's. For a 4" lift and stock flares, 35's will work, but 37's might fill the wheel wells better. But a lot of it depends on personal opinion. If you go down to JK Show & Tell, you will find some huge picture threads with just about any combination of lift/tire size you could want. The sites search engine isn't the greatest, so use this string in google or wherever, followed by what you want to find. A lot of the pic threads have 'show' or 'post' or 'pics' in the title, so try a couple different combinations for more threads.

Did you read the component list you posted? Do a quick search for opinions on Cam Bolts!! Also do some reading on front driveshaft problems with taller lifts. There is no magic height or time frame saying if/when there will be a problem, but you might be ahead of the game if you start budgeting for a replacement. The other component to check might be the rear trackbar bracket. Some are just cheap relocation brackets that add extra stress/leverage on the already weak stock mount. You might want to look at a better weld-on version, or one that has ubolts around the axle tube.

If you haven't opened the link that was posted to dirtmans lift thread, you go ahead and read it. It's a good place to start the research on components.

Not many people are happy with 3.21's and 35" or larger tires. Drive it and see what you think, but go ahead and start budgeting for 4.56's. (read a bunch of gearing threads before dropping the money, but 4.56's seem popular for the 3.6 and 35's). In addition to the gears, you will need a new open carrier for the front d30, or a full case locker/limited. The rear carrier will be fine.

Thank you, I really appreciate the information and topics for research. Idid read dirtman's thread you referenced....some good info there. I did not know there were issues with cambolts. But that's why I am asking. Sometimes you don't know what you don't know! I figured I would learn what I could from guys who have been there.

Cams are the cheap method of caster correction, the other options are drop brackets, longer/shorter fixed control arms, and adjustable control arms. They all have their pro's/con's, you just need to do the research to try and figure out what is right for you. Maybe it's cams, more likely it won't be.

The other item I forgot in the last reply was steering correction. As the lift gets taller, the front trackbar and draglink run at steeper angles. Right around 3-3.5" is where people start thinking about flattening those angles. The cheap method is a drop pitman (companies that sell kits with cam bolts like these...), the more recommended method is a draglink flip. Not saying you have to do this, just that neither option is included in that lift.

And just a note - I am not trying to steer you away from a 4" lift, as I personally like the mid-sized lift range and bigger tires, just bringing up some things to be aware of. Better to go into it knowing the possible issues and how to correct them, rather than jumping in blindly and hating the handling or getting pissed off about the constant expenses or posting up thread after thread saying "help me!! why is this happening???"
