I need help, currently have 33X11.5 X16 on a 8.5 in wide rim. I want to go to 35X12.5 X16 I have been told by tire dealers that I cannot put a 12.5 in wide tire on a 8.5 in wide rim. In the forums I see a lot of people who run 12.5 on 8 in rims What's the story? this tire garage does a lot of trucks and jeeps and is a very good off road shop. Will this work? Can this work or do I have to by 9 in or bigger rims for the 12.5 wide 35's??? Help Please

 

Go to tirerack.com and take a look at their tire specs for the tire you're looking at there you will find wheel width ranges for tires.

 

It'll fit, however, since the wheel width is less than the tire manufacturer recommends, many chain stores will not mount them. You'll have better luck at a local mom & pop place. Plenty of guys here run larger rubber on stock wheels.

 

i run 35 x 12.50 on 17 x 8.5 hutchingson wheels with no issues.

As mentioned above, you can find the 'recommended' rim width range in the specs list for each tire. For example - for a 315/75/16 bfg ko2, the rim width recommendation is 8-11"

 

I'm running 35x12.50R18 ST maxx on my stock 7.5 wide Sahara wheels with 1.5 inch spacers. The trick is chalk testing to find the proper air pressure. Over inflating can get dangerous. Running narrow wheels and wide tires is what us old folks call a poor man's beadlock. You can air down much farther with a narrow rim with out risk of loosing a bead. Also, the tire will protrude a tad farther than your wheel, so in a lot of cases your wheel will be spared rock rash.
