Default Mismatched Gear Ratio Question

Picked up a used prorock front 44 on CL. It has 4.56 and I run 4.88. I'm almost certain but want to confirm the following before driving anywhere: As long as I dont engage 4WD I can run the different gear ratios front to rear even with front shaft installed with no issues. I just need to run a few errands and then drive to the gear shop to have the regear done...

You should be OK. Was thinking there might be an issue with some electronics picking up differences in speed sensors, but the wheels don't care. Keep it in 2WD and do what you need to do.

Thanks! I was thinking that at first also, but the the WSS read at the wheel in the unit bearing independently of each other. I was worried about the transfer case but it looks as though in 2wd there is no physical connection anywhere between the 2 axles drive trains.

As long as you already had it removed to change out the axle assembly just leave the front drive shaft in the Jeep (don't re-install it) and have it put on when you do the gears

I had the same kind of issue.. was running 5.13s in front and 4.88s in back. I didn't have any issues, just make sure not to put it in 4WD.

Don't re-install the drive shaft. Leave it off until you get them geared the same.

It won't matter as long as he doesn't engage 4wd.

I had my front driveshaft connected while my rear was 3.73 and my front was 4.10...drove it like that for 2 months until I had both regeared.

For peace of mind I'd leave the front driveshaft out. It takes out any possibility of there being a conflict between front and rear diffs.

If you put it in 4WD, you'll have an issue. No need to pull the driveshaft if you don't. It's not that difficult. 4WD = BAD. 2WD = GOOD.
