Default B&M Precision SportShifter INSTALL (07-17 Manual Wranglers)

B&M Racing introduces the new Precision SportShifter for 2007-2017 Jeep Wrangler JK models equipped with the NSG370 6-speed manual transmission. The unit features a cnc billet aluminum case with an electric blue anodized finish which houses internal components made from super tough 4140 chromoly. The shift throw has been reduced by 35% over the factory shifter along with the detent pressure which has been significantly increased creating a noticeably stiffer shift feel. This was done to address problems with the softness of the factory shifter detent springs which easily pop out of gear while off-roading. The shifter uses the factory shift stick and knob, however a new B&M shift handle is also in the works that will accept a variety of traditional threaded knobs. B&M Racing is the first and only company to address the JK's need for an upgraded manual shifter option. Made in the USA and supported by a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

1) Remove the shifter and transfer case shift knobs:

First put the shifter in neutral and the transfer case in 4 High. You can use a rubber strap wrench. I didn’t have one. So from experience removing the knobs for an Atlas install, I found it easiest to get man’s grip on the main body of the shift knob, give a serious twist one way, and then the other to loosen it up. Then continue twisting back and forth as you pull up. The inside of the shifter is made of a soft plastic and will flex, returning to shape in a few seconds.

4) Remove the shifter:
Use a T45 torx to remove the (1) bolt in the center of the shifter. Then, spray some lubricant in the hole where the bolt was removed. With a pair of vise grips, clamp onto the stick down low near where the bolt was removed and lightly hit the vise grips with a hammer in an upwards motion, to pull the shifter stick off of the shifter shaft.

6) Lower the transmission and cross member:
Support the center of the transmission cross member with a jack. Remove the (4) bolts on the outer ends of the cross member, and lower the transmission down roughly 2-4”. Note: You may have to remove the (2) forward most gas tank skid bolts to gain access to the passenger side cross member bolts.

7) Remove the donut:
From underneath the car reach your hand up to the top of shifter and carefully push the styrofoam shifter donut up through the interior hole in the floor. This part will take a little time, just have patience. This shifter donut seal keeps water from coming inside the vehicle. If this donut gets torn or damaged, it is a low cost part at the dealership.

8) Trim the donut:
On a table place the new B&M shifter on top of the shifter donut and trace completely around it with a marker. Set the shifter aside. Measure and trace 1/4" INSIDE of your original traced out line. Carefully cut along the INSIDE line to allow the B&M shifter to fit securely.

Nice pics, especially the before & after video. How do you like it longer term? I'm especially interested in the difference while driving on sand dunes and 4LO terrain?

It was stiff at first, but broke in quickly and I've enjoyed the upgrade over time. It's noticeably shorter and more positive shifting. I never really had an issue with it popping out of gear on my current JK (2013), but I did on my last one (2008) and wish these would have been available. When it's in gear now, it's IN gear. Haven't used in the dunes yet, will find out in late March. It's been in mud, rocks, gravel, snow, and ice without issue.
