Default 2008 3.8 v 2013 3.6

It's been a while since I've owned a JK, but just sold my 92 YJ.... I know how well Jeeps hold their value, but always remain amazed at prices. Interested on the forums thoughts on a 2008 with 90k miles for 13,500 vs a 2013 with 84k miles for 18,000. Both are manual transmissions with soft tops, have no modifications and are very clean single owner vehicles. I appreciate any insight on whether the newer 3.6 would be worth the 4,500 difference.
Thanks!

The newer motor is worth some extra $$$ but it's tough to quantify. Do they both have the same axle ratio? The interior of the 'new' style is also easier to find parts for since it's 11-17 as opposed to 07-10.

I love my 08 with the 3.8, but not only is the engine worth something, but the whole 2013 vehicle is 1/2 the age of the 08. That's worth something, too.

That's a tough one. Part of me says that $4500 difference is not only in engine, but in the updated interior with improved ergonomics and improved seats. The other part of me says if you're ok with the older interior and the engine is in good shape, the older JK might be a better buy, regear it and roll on. The difference in savings would fund some nice upgrades. Keep the body in good shape and if the engine ever dies, LS or Hemi swap.

If you were comparing autos I'd say go with the 3.6 hands down, but the 3.8 vs 3.6 with a 5 speed is pretty similar. $18K for a 13 is not a bad deal...I'd probably buy that one. You can play with either of them for a few years and get your money back I'd think.

My choice would be the 2013 for a solid answer.

Sooo many people who have had the 3.8 then get the 3.6 are resoundingly appreciative of the 40% increase in horsepower, so the 3.6 of the 2013 gets my vote. Also, as another has stated, consider the lifecycle cost. Yes, the 2013 costs more but I suspect you will easily recoup that money when it's your turn to sell it. For me, there is no choice, the 2013 is the only way to go in my opinion.

I went from the 2008 to a 2015. So happy now with new engine. Only down side is my 2008 never leaked with its hard top but the 2015 does.

My 2 Cents

I went from a 2008 to a 2013 (both autos). Never regretted it once, so much more power.

Keeping my 2008 that I bought brand new. Paid for. Lifetime powertrain warranty. There's nothing Fiat can do to get me out of it and into a newer model.
