Default Jeep Jk loose steering and binding

Hey guys, was hoping to get some insight from so other Jeep owners to see if anyone has had this issue and what it may be. Over a year ago I had really bad death wobble and ended up rebuilding the whole front steering with synergy (tie rod, drag link, track bar, ball joints and a new gear box). All was well until about 6 months ago I was doing some light off-roading in Joshua tree and when I hopped back on the paved roads, all of a sudden my steering wheel started spinning a million miles an hour and I lost control of the Jeep as my lower steering shaft completely disconnected from the gear box. Thankfully I was able to stop the Jeep, and have since replaced the steering shaft and blown clock spring. When it disconnected, a good amount of oil of some sort had spilled all over my axle and I couldn’t pin point where from exactly. As of now, I started getting some binding in my wheel and a pretty noticeable dead zone in the steering wheel. If you have any insight as to what could be the issue or what may have leaked please feel free to chime in!

Suggest having someone move the steering wheel back and forth in that dead-zone, and follow the movement from the coupler on the shaft from the steering wheel to the pitman arm, then the drag link, and so forth. Have a feeling there's going to be a lot of lost motion within the steering gear.

Stay in touch,

If you have a big dead zone, would be pointing to steering box no? I can't imagine anything south of the sector shaft creating a dead zone, and I can't imagine anything north of the steering box causing that either....which leaves the steering box itself as the culprit in my head. Maybe I'm missing something. I suspect fix the dead zone, and you fix the binding as well.

Don't fark around with an issue like that seeing as steering is really important for your health. Sounds like the power assist section went haywire with the pitman arm coming off and everything going crazy on you. Did you stake the big sector shaft nut as well with thin pin punch or center punch? Probably time to bend over and buy a new steering box.

Hey guys, wanted to hop back in and say thank you for the insight! Pretty sure it is the gear box. Unfortunately that gear box is only a year old but thankfully it’s under warranty! Jeeps at the shop right now getting looked at to do the warranty work so I’ll keep you guys updated!
