Question UPDATE! Gear Brand?

Regearing JK, what Brand of gears do you recommend? all about the same? any to avoid? Thanks.

I had regear done last week and went with Revolution Gears because that's what shop use's, went and picked it up and he had it on lift with rear cover off and pointed out that the Spider gears had some chipped place's, he said he see's alot of it on Dana44's. He said he looked around his shop for some but couldn't find any.
Jeep has 73K i'm 2nd owner but it seems to have been taken care and i haven't noticed anything odd so right now i'm trying to figure out what route i want to take, it seems there's not alot of options for the JK with an Auto? True Trac or Powertrac pro limited slip? I didn't have a new LSD in the budget so kinda aggravated with it at the moment.
Any suggestion's on LSD or other option's? i'm not gonna put the Trac loc back in because it seems to be a common thing with these.
I went with 4:56's after alot of thought because i'm only going to 34"-35"s, right now i'm on 33's and i really like the difference but still breaking in the gears so it's getting babied and because of spider gear issue.

Whatever your installer recommends and sources for you. They will be the ones dealing with any install issues or warranty problems, so just a lot simpler if they supply the gears. Saves all the drama of "our install was perfect, it has to be the gears 'you' supplied..."

Any regear is going to be more about quality labor than difference in gear brand. I'd only say that many shops are using whatever they have the best margin on, or in areas that are highly competitive, whatever allows them to reflect the lowest price to the customer to get them in the door.

I’ve done gears and it’s not a pleasant job. A couple of years ago I needed to re-gear my ‘15 JKR and let a shop do it. $1,500.00 and they used Yukon gears. Both axles have been quiet and trouble free. A few weeks ago I sucked it up and did the job on a Strange 9” that I have in my 454 El Camino. I used US gears and all went well. They run quiet and smooth. Now... I bought this rear directly from Strange Engineering last year and it always had a whine to it. When I disassembled it I discovered that all of the bearing preloads were too loose. Strange has one of the best reputations in the business, yet they built me a rear that was not set up properly.

The point of this post is that you’ll know it’s done right if you do it yourself. That is, if you’re comfortable with the very tedious job. I’ve watched videos of professionals setting up gears and never breaking out a torque wrench. Maybe they’re just that good, but I doubt it. Installation skill trumps gear manufacturer choice.

Exactly. I learned this the hard way. First time Jeep owner and re-gear and I decided to order the gears for the shop to save them the trouble. They never suggested sourcing the parts themselves. I couldn't find consensus online for a good brand at the time and went with Ten Factory (Motive) based on a recommendation from Northridge 4x4 sales.

The gears now have issues and the tech is blaming the gears. Northridge and Motive say it was the installer. Now that I've talked around a lot more I'm finding out this is unfortunately common.

I'll add that after calling around other good shops and vendors I got top recommendations for Dana Spicer OE and several shops said they would not install G2 or Motive gears (among other brands).
