So I keep finding the perfect spot for it and then I talk myself out of it.
First I was going to place it above the license plate. I temporarily ran the cables and wasn't happy with the field of view. Then I thought about running it to the spare tire (even got a bracket) and then I realized that I use the trasharoo which would block it...... so I'm stuck again! Looks like there is a camera that can be mounted in the rear brake light for the 07-11 jeeps and since it's the same light as the Ursa Minor tops, I might wait till I pickup the UM top before I get the camera installed unless someone has a great spot that works for them?
Oh yeah, was thinking about the rear bumper as well, but if I center mount it, the trasharoo/tire would obstruct it still...... so where did all y'all mount yours? Any other locations then the ones I already mentioned?
I did a search as I am sure others have to see what a Trasharoo is. The Trasharoo looks like a back pack that mounts on the spare tire. Looks to be used as an external gear bag more than a trash container from what I can tell. In So Cal you probably do not get a lot of rain, so it probably stays on most of the time. Leaving it on does mess up a great mounting option for the camera.
My JK goes in the Stereo Shop tomorrow to have the head unit replaced. It will get a back-up camera as part of the head unit install. Mine will be mounted to the Third Break Lite RING behind the Spare Tire.
Looking at a few pics of the trasharoo posted on their site, it seems that it was hanging high and there would be plenty of clearance for a camera in the bumper. Maybe post a pic from the rear so we can get a better visualization of what you're working with?
Instead of a rear bumper, I'm just running a cheap frame cover from Olympic, which had a thin filigree above the company name. I wanted the camera placed low to help with backing up to the boat trailer, so just snipped the filigree out and bolted the camera right in there. Even with a 37" spare and camera angled down a bit toward the ball, I get a good rear view.
Actually I never have really thought about a back up camera on a jeep, great thing about them is they have very few blind spots compared to other vehicles, at least the two door, probably make backing up to a trailer quicker
So the jeep has blind spots: when you're loaded you have no view to the back. Also when my wife drives it she feels more comfortable with the rear view camera.
Anyways, below the bumper there is little room. I like what was posted about the camera being mounted to the top of the hardtop.
