JK Write-UpsBulletin board forum regarding useful installation write-ups, budget fixes and homemade solutions for the Jeep JK Wrangler (Rubicon, Sahara, Unlimited and X).
Bulletpoint Mounting Solutions has just released the new RubiGrid and I decided to pick one up and do an install write up and review. I have been looking for a universal mounting platform for phones and accessories and this seemed to check all the boxes. The RubiGrid is Bulletpoint Mounting Solutions newest product which is available for many makes and models of vehicles. It features and all metal base that is very sturdy and allows the flexibility of many different mounting options using their mounting balls to attach their arms and accessory mounts. The install is a little more involved than traditional mounts but it is very simple and comes with all the tools needed for the install. The only thing you need is a drill.
My order arrived quickly and my first impression was the quality of the packaging. Everything is individually boxed, bagged, and includes a sticker with every accessory.
The RubiGrid is a two piece all metal base that has a very nice powdercoated finish. It is very high quality and solid. It mounts in the mounting tray in the top of the dash. Once mounted you can bolt the mounting balls in any configuration you choose, and even mount a CB or GMRS radio if you choose. The mounting balls are very durable and the hardware is of good quality. The mounting arms come in different lengths and colors and have quick connects at both ends. This makes attaching accessories to the mounting balls very easy and they are extremely sturdy. The mounting arms come in 4 different lengths and are available in 9 different colors. They all have a carbon fiber finish and look awesome! I chose the blue arms to match my blue Jeep. I picked up the short and standard arm lengths. The short is great for mounting things to the front of the base to keep them close to the dash, and the standards are perfect for cell phone mounts that place them closer to the seats.
Here is a pic of the short arm beside one of the standard arms. The arms go from 4 cm for the short all the way up to 20 cm for the extra long. The standard is 7 cm and the long is 10 cm.
Here is a picture of one of the mounting balls. They attach with 4 bolts.
Next you have the mounting base. As I mentioned, it is an all metal 2 piece base. It attaches with provided nuts and bolts or self tapping screws, and also has adhesive tape on the bottom of the mounting base. Per the directions the nut and bolt will be the sturdiest option, and the self tapping screws lighter duty, which is obvious.
As you can see, The RubiGrid comes with everything needed for the install. Two Hardware options and all needed tools and even the drill bits. It even comes with a cool bullet bottle opener. The only thing you will need is a drill. I actually used the included tools to start my install just to see if they were good enough to do the job, and yes they actually are, although it will take just a little longer. It is a very well thought out kit.
Accessories. There are a lot of mounting accessories currently available, and I'm sure more will be added in the future. Standard and XL phone mounts, magnetic phone mounts, a camera mount, a tablet mount, a CB mount, a handheld radio mount, and plenty of other accessories to add flexibility to the mounting arms, I picked up two of the XL phone mounts, a CB mount, a camera mount, and a handheld radio mount.
Here is the XL phone mount. It has a spring loaded clamp and metal construction and a nice black powdercoated finish.
Next up is the CB microphone mount. All metal with a nice black powdercoated finish.
And here is the handheld radio mount, Same nice construction and finish.
I forgot to take a picture of the GoPro mount but it is very nice and adjustable. You will see it in the finished install pictures.
Next up, the installation...

There are plenty of YouTube videos showing this install. It requires you to remove the upper dash, drill a few holes, install the lower base, and re-install the dash. It is not difficult just take your time with it.
1) Remove the rubber insert in the middle of the dash and remove the single bolt.
2) Remove the power window switch panel. Just grab and pull firmly. You may need a small flathead screwdriver to help pry it. Once it is out, extend the red tab all the way, then squeeze and firmly pull to disconnect the wiring harness. Once the harness is removed, remove the bolt that secures the dash.
3) Remove the panel beneath the steering wheel. It is held by clips. Simply pull it out away from the dash.
4) Remove the upper screws on either side of the steering wheel, then carefully pull the upper dash away. The rest is held on by clips.
5) With the upper dash removed, place the lower RubiGrid mounting bracket in the upper dash tray. Center it with the center mounting hole where it bolts to the upper dash. Once centered, use a sharpie or pencil to mark the mounting holes on the bottom, and 4 holes on the sides if you choose to use the nuts and bolts there as well. I chose to just use the self tapping screws for the sides, and the nuts and bolts on the bottom. Using the nuts and bolts in all 8 holes is probably the best and most secure method. Once the holes are marked, remove the mounting bracket and use the small included drill bit to drill pilot holes in the 4 lower mounting locations as well as the 4 side mounting locations if you don't want to use the self tapping screws. One the pilot holes are drilled, use the larger included drill bit to fully drill out the mounting holes.
6) With the holes drilled, clean out the bottom of the tray with some alcohol so the self adhesive backing will stick.
7) Peel back the self adhesive strip and slowly and carefully lower the mounting bracket and center it with the holes. Press down firmly. Next use the included nuts and bolts to secure the bracket to the dash tray. The washer and nut go under the dash from the bottom. Tighten all 4 bolts, then attach the front and rear brackets using the self tapping screws, or nuts and bolts if you drilled the holes. With everything tight you are now ready to re-install your dash and mount the upper mounting plate.
8) Re-install the dash in reverse process of removal. Make sure all the clips are lined up and push into place. Re-install all the bolts. Push the panel below the steering wheel back into the clips. Install the center bolt and pusher the power window switch back into the harness, pushing firmly and locking the tab back into place, and sliding the lock back over. The bracket install is now complete. Next up, installing the mounting balls to the RubiGrid mounting plate.
Bulletpoint Mounting Solutions says you can mount up to 5 mounting balls at once. This is the configuration I decided to use, but I will probably change things around in the future. I didn't try it, but you might be able to get even more mounting balls on if you are creative, although it would be very busy. The mounting balls attach with provided nuts and bolts. Once you have everything where you want it, tighten all the nuts. Now just place the mounting plate on the lower bracket and carefully attach it using the 4 provided screws. Do not over tighten these as they could strip.
Your RubiGrid is now installed! It looks awesome and definitely feels and looks like it came this way from the factory. Very solid and the quality and attention to detail is outstanding. The only thing left to do is install all the mounting arms and all the mounting accessories...
Now it's time to install the arms and accessories. The arms are basically a ball and socket design, and they work very well. You simply loosen the knob on each connector and slide it over the ball, then tighten it down. They are very adjustable.
I had to reach out to Bulletpoint to see what this mystery tool was...
It is called the F-IT tool, and it is used to tighten down the knobs on the mounting arms. It actually works really good for that last little bit of tightness.
Once the arms are mounted to the balls on the RubiGrid, you simply mount any accessory you want using, inserting the ball into the socket and tightening the knobs. First up is the GoPro mount.
Now to mount all the arms. I chose to mount a short arm in the center to hold the CB and handheld radio mount, and a standard arm on each side to hold the XL phone holders.
It looks awesome! And the whole system is very sturdy. I'm really happy with the finished product.
Now it's time to drive it around and see how it does...
Here are some pictures of the CB microphone mount and the handheld radio mount. Both did their job perfectly. I did a lot of driving today and the RubiGrid is a very solid mounting platform and the arms don't budge once they are tightened down where you want them. It held my bulky phone and handheld GMRS radio without any movement, even when going over bumps. Anyone looking for a great mounting solution for their JK or JL, I highly recommend this system. Short of going with a bulky full rail mount, to me this is the best setup on the market right now.
CB microphone mount. Universal design will fit many CB and GMRS radio mics.
Handheld radio mount. My MIdland GXT1030 fits perfectly. Note, leave the belt clip on when using this mount.
Just a quick update. Bulletpoint Mounting Solutions has updated the Rubigrid for the 2012 to 2018 Jeep JK and sent me out the new version to install and review. While the previous version was very good, the update gives a big improvement in stability. The previous version only had two mounting points, and the new version has four mounting points. The new one is much more stable and helps to stop the rocking back and forth of the arms.
The first thing I noticed on the new version besides the added mounting holes was the nice nameplate they have added.
Here you can see the big difference between the old and new mounting brackets. The previous version only has the two supports and the new one has four. It is now much more stable when driving. The nice thing about the new mount is that you don't have to take the dash apart to install it like the previous version. You simply remove the dash pad and single bolt, use the attached adhesive strip and use the included self tapping screws. It is very simple. I did have to take my dash apart to remove the previous mount, but the holes I had drilled were exactly the same and I was able to use the included nuts and bolts for an even mire secure installation, so if someone has the previous version and just wants to update, it is a very easy swap.
You do need to install the supplied self stick spacers to the sides as shown. They help it fit tightly in the dash.
Here is the new mounting bracket installed. I did use alcohol to clean the surface prior to applying the adhesive strip. The improvement in stability was very noticeable once the new mount was installed.
Here is a comparison of the old vs new mounting plate. They are physically the same size but the new one has five mounting holes now instead of four and the added name plate. This does change the arm mounting options a little with the added holes but still plenty of room to mount them where you want.
Here is how I chose to set up the mounting balls prior to installing the Rubigrid.
And installed. A quick drive showed the big improvement in stability. I highly recommend this product. From the packaging to the installed product, the Rubigrid is top notch. The quality and attention to detail is great, and this is a company that cares about the end user and always wants feedback to improve their products.
