35’s wandering/unstable
I’ve done a ton of digging and am a bit perplexed. Well versed in Jeeps having owned and modified seven over the years. Bought a 2010JKU and replaced everything- all four ball joints, tie rod and ends, drag link, stabilizer, new bushings, both front bearings…all of it. I install 33” Patagonia MT’s and I don’t like the look or the noise so I go to a 35” BFG AT KO’s, 17x9 steelies. Now it wanders and I get DW from braking while going over slight bumps. Only thing I can think of is that the balance is off on the wheels. Thoughts?
Hey Psycho, with the heavier rolling weight of the 35" tires it is possible that a retorques of the track bar bolts might be needed. might retorque the rest (drag link- tierod) while your at it. Are control arms bolts good-N-tight ?
Son just went through some similar thing with a MC lift and CAs etc. Turned out we re-installed his what he thought was ruined SS, raised the pressure in his tires a bit and checked toe in. DW gone. Of course a lot of aftermarket CAs don't need huge torque or correct suspension resting position to hold the inner bushing as the arm swivels around the inner. In son's case the fix was simple.
Track bar mounts on my JKU were oval'd out.
I don't know the history of the jeep, but I bought it with tiny little 29in tires on it (and a strong rod knock),
Once I have the other issues sorted out, I found I had the Death Wobble.
I'm starting to wonder if the tiny tires were an attempt to lessen the DW, but I have no idea.
I put the information for my fix here: Write- Up Diagnosing Death Wobble and Fixing Non-DW Shimmies and Wobbles - Page 36 - JK-Forum.com - The top destination for Jeep JK and JL Wrangler news, rumors, and discussion
Luckily, I know a guy, and he did an excellent job fixing my track bar mounts.
My repro was really clear when using a cell phone to record video, and then me running the vehicle and moving the steering.
the front axle moved separate from the vehicle.
