Default Do you NEED a new rear tire carrier

Been waitin for a while on a FT 3" lift - buut when it comes its going in with some Toyo 35's on 18 sahara rims. My question is - can the rear door hold that tire & the added stress of a bike rack?? I willl eventually order a new rear bumper - just waiting for ALL the choices

Thanks

One of the other guys is running a 35" on a 17" rim and it just rests on the lip of the factory bumper, taking some of the weight off the tailgate. I plan on doing the same now that he told me about it.

Speaking from past experience, I would think long and hard before I did this. It CAN be done but the extra weight of the oversized tire/wheel WILL wear on the hinges when opening and closing the tailgate. I did this on my 98 TJ and it eventually got to the point where the tailgate did not want to close normally because of sag. Really no different than the way vintage car door hinges come to sag over time and then need to be replaced or rebuilt. You are just accelerating that wear and tear so they will wear out more quickly. I know I will be doing it right and getting a tire carrier bumper this time around when my JK finally shows up.

IGOFSHN My 35 on my 17 did not fit.

If you add a wheel spacer, I'm willing to bet it would. I have a 1" spacer on the spare as well and run 35x12.5x18. It does rest on the bumper and takes the weight off so I don't see a problem with this. Will probably replace the rear bumper down the road, but that is a ways out.

I used a 1.5 spacer. Worked like a champ.

Mine fits without a spacer. I did remove the 2 rubber bumpers from the tailgate and replace them with grommets, and it does sit on the bumper.

If you are gonna get a bumper with a tire carrier, order it now. I've been waiting for my rear LoD bumpers for over two weeks, still no shipment. Also I have been waiting for my front Purejeep bumper from Quadratec and the status is "drop ship", and again over two weeks. I hate waiting.
