Default To Boot, or not to Boot (shock boots)

Hey guys,

So is it best to use shock boots, or not? I've read both positves and negatives.
Some say they hold dirt in, and some say they repel dirt.

I don't think I'd use them if they were on top of the shock, but if they're on the bottom and have drain holes in the lower plate like the Full Traction M-Force do, I can see them as being useful? Ie. Good Drainage.

Calling all serious 4-wheelers with experience, what are your opinions?

Thanks~

It depends a lot on what type of wheeling you will be doing. If you are spending a lot of time in the water or mud, I think it is best not to have the boot on. I have done both, and prefer no boots. Much easier to keep clean and dry and prevents things from getting trapped inside the boot. JMO.

No Boot. In my experience, they are just a trap for mud and water that'll ultimately ruin your shocks.

A lot also depends on how the shock is mounted, and that the drain holes for water if it gets in the boot can drain off. My M-Force mount rod down, so I am running the boots. They keeps a lot of mud and dust off the exposed rod and I have not had issues when running boots in the past when the shocks are mounted this way. But to confirm what WOL said, my Rancho 9000's that I ran on my previous vehicle mount rod up, and the boots DID trap water and dust, causing rust and wear on the rod and shock body under the boot. I would NOT run boots again on a shock mounted this way.

I used to run boots on prior lift kits and all they do is trap everything. No boots! Btw all my shocks mounted rod end up. May be a different scenario with shocks mounted upside down.
