Default "Throaty-est" Muffler?

I'd like to get some better sound out of my jeep and after reading the posts seems like it's kind of a waste to get a whole catback system so I'm leaning towards just adding a muffler to my jeep and was just curious if anyone knew which muffler will give me the lowest best sound?

Don't really care about performance, I've read through the posts on here and listened to a number of youtube clips but of course it's hard to tell from a youtube video.

I've always had pretty loud exhausts on my trucks and I'd like to have some kind of nice sound for the jeep but i am a little nervous about it being annoyingly too loud with the doors/top off...

I had a "super 40" flowmaster on my truck which i liked a lot it gave a lower tone than the regular 40.

I'm definitely nervous about having a "ricer" sound since it's only a 3.8L, a couple of the clips i saw on youtube didn't sound too good to me... One guy had a magnaflow and it made his jeep sound like a civic...

any advice??

I have a super 40 on my JK and it does as good as anything you'll find I think on sound. I mean you shine up a turd and its still a turd after all....

Dollar for dollar if you just want a better sound and a smidge better performance, a flowmaster super 40, regular 40, or even 50 series is going to be a good cheap fix.

Another good reason for it is the small footprint. You can see it tucks up nicely compared to stock mufflers...

I wouldn't say this is entirely accurate. The catback systems such as what Woods sells are probably worth the money. They actually DO something useful. They relocate the muffler out of harm's way in the middle of the Jeep, probably the way Chrysler should have. I believe the Woods kit also uses all stainless pipe and hardware. I know the muffler is stainless. Maybe he will see this and chime in.

Not at all - I think the super 40 is perfect. If you think it'll be too loud, get a 50 series - they are what is generally recommended for the JK from flowmaster.

This is doable Mythbusters proved it.

I'm also concerned with top off volume, I guess I'll check into the 50, anything to make my buddy's TJ look smaller.

I went with the regular 40 series and it sounds great along with my CAI. It has a nice burbly sound at low rpms and is pretty throaty under full revs. I've also noticed that the more time it's been on, the deeper the tone has gotten. Couldn't be happier...

Oh and you're right, a cat-back system is a waste of money
