After the first 20 miles or so make sure you give the gears a good hour to cool down before you roll again. After that the first 500 miles you should take it easy, change the gear oil and then you're pretty much ready to roll.

Gradual acceleration and easing on and off the throttle. RPM nor speed isn't really an issue but mashing the throttle is.

I've never had to do this. I've setup many ring and pinion and gone directly to the drag strip... if gears are properly setup there's no "break-in period".

well that's great...forgive me if I seem confused. I plan on regearing soon and this is good info to know. Is there a "break-in" period or not. Are all gears the same? They rebuild engines for drag races and immediatley run them but every rebuilt engine I ever heard of on the street is recommended to have a break-in period. Thanks for the input but I believe that we/I need some clarification.

as far as a break in period i really think its not needed. i had my 5:13's installed on a thursday and pulled a trailer 45 miles to the trails loaded with two 4wheelers and then took the jeep through the 26 mile trail and did not take it easy on it. no problems yet and that was back in december.

Basically you follow the same rules just like a new car for the first 500 miles. After that you should change your diff fluid to get rid of the excess metal shavings that are produced with new gears.

standard proceedure after installing new gears IS to go easy on them for the first 250-500. typically, this means to try not to drive at high speeds for extended periods of time. after that time, it is recommended that you flush and refill your differential with new gear oil. i personally like to pull the diff cover and use the opportunity to inspect the wear pattern and use some brake cleaner to do a thorough cleaning. for those of you who think this is a load of crap or a waste of time, by all means, don't do it, after all, it's your jeep. for the rest of you, this is something that i would highly recommend. i have seen plenty of good installs still create a lot of metal to come loose within this break in period and left unchecked, it can cause carrier or pinion bearings to fail - i have seen this happen and most recently to the member trail bud.
