You can go to Kennedy Meadows and thereabouts and do both, the feedwaters for Lake Isabella. Kings Canyon and Sequioa (sp) National Parks, (the Canyon has some real nice spots for both as well as the upper altitudes)

Various parts of the Kern River. The Delta in Frisco, and lots of other spots up north.

Usta be spots in Ramona near Diego and believe it or not there are other places besides Pismo one can go surf fishing and 4 wheeling.

If you're gutsy there is Baja Calif, but they don't take kindly to Navy, etc. And you almost have to be illegally armed in order to survive.

Ah Kennedy Meadows, my friends are trying to get me to CAMP there over Memorial weekend. They were talking about the fishing they all do and that I could go wheeling. There you go! Perfect! Oh except for the camping thing, I'm still working on that.

The Dusy ershim trail for wheeling...Courtright Lake for fishing...if you go on the Dusy you should be able at some point to hike a short distance (or drive to) a point on the lake or river that feeds Courtright. This of course would be for future reference as the road( Dinkey creek rd.) is not open past the gate at Dinkey Creek at this time of year (snow) ...hope that helps...oops just re-read your post..you said monterey to san diego..sorry..this is inland

lake isabell and the kern river. you can wheel the freeway ridge, black gulch, keysville trails and fish at the lake and or the river.

this is lake isabella

that's what it looks like from here

here's another view from one of the trails

there are alot of camp grounds near the lake, you can catch all sorts of fish from the lake and the river. above the lake mostly trout, at and below the lake you can catch bass, catfish, trout, bluegill crappie, and carp.

check out my webshots page to see pics of freeway ridge.
