Best place to camp and wheel - ATV and buggy rental as well

If you something closer you can go to Point Mugu.

Pismo is the only place I know of in Cali where you can drive on beach. If you plan on hitting the dunes be sure and take a whip/flag you must have one.

Like everyone else said... Pismo (Oceano Dunes) is currently the only place in CA that allows vehicles to drive along the beach. I've visited several times with my JK and once on a RZR. You can drive in the water and thru miles of awesome dunes. Most camp in an area starting about 100 yards from the water. This area provides restrooms and protection from fast moving vehicles.

I have not tried, but I hear tent camping can be a pain with the constant movement of sand along the ground and air. Most use a travel trailer or motorhome. I stay at one of the local motels. This summer I'm camping in my 6x10 enclosed cargo trailer. It will help keep blowing sand out of my food.

You will see large motorhomes way back in the sand. Makes you scratch your head wondering how they got there... (tugged in by a JK).

Hope this helps!
