Wow,I wish I'd known about this. My wife and I went to a lot of the exact same places on Sunday - Including the railfan memorial (which we almost shot over and then down the steep long drop!!!!

We also took the powerline maintenance road that you get to from 66. Go across the ravine, up and across the tracks, inland, climb, climb, climb, negotiate some serious erosion and rock falls, climb, descend, climb descen, eroision, climb, climb, descend until you hit the tracks where they cross pearblossom/138 near Lone Pine Cyn, and exit at Lone PIne.
Great fun - my wife's first serious offroad adventure (my third). She likened it to the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland.
