It just goes to show that we need to treat every trail with respect no matter the difficulty rating. There's not really much you can do on a hill that has soft sand and hard packed surfaces. Mix those together and it's like driving on ball bearings.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I thought I was going to get some good information from a friend of ours who knows the victim in this incident, but no luck. I did come accross this article http://rotwnews.com/area/crestline/off-road/7016 and as you can see from the pix that the driver had to have been ejected from the Bronco while it was rolling. It also appears that the passengers compartment is largely intact, probably because it was equipped with a rollbar. I still don't know what caused the Bronco to roll. Don't know if he swerved to avoid another vehicle on the road or what, if anything, contributed in his getting sideways in the sandy road.

I'm familiar to that area from the pictures in the link above after a few runs up/down it. The trail to the lefts is an 'easy' one the right side trail in the picture a fairly difficult one even to guys that are experienced wheelers. Puts things into perspective when you see this kind of carniage as a result of hills we sometimes view as being 'easy' obstacles.

I was hoping someone would recognize the area. Although it's sad to see someone lose their life doing something like off-roading, I think there's something to learn from this event. It begs to be answered: did the guy get in over his head, or did something else contribute to the accident? I'd like to see the area just to make my own assessment; it's something I think all of us should do so we can make better decisions.

I don't believe it is Cleghorn, but it is close by.
