We have had two bites in the Park so far this year. The first was in late June to a
Park worker who was repairing a remote guzzler for the Big Horned sheep. The helo
that dropped him off was still on the ground when he was bitten. He just walked back over to the helo and was flown to the hospital. Large western red diamond back. Bite was on his hand. He is still not fully recovered as I understand. The last one was two Fridays ago up near Julian. A fly fisherman stepped on a western red
diamond back and was bitten on the foot. He died an hour later. He was 65.
We have had more snake sighting this year that I can ever remember. Don't know why. Here in SoCal. rattlesnakes give live birth, no eggs. The babies are born fully equipped and can bite and poison you from day one. The birth period is usually from 15 September to 15 October. That means that there should be a good number of
small, but very deadly, snakes out and about in the remote areas of SoCal. Be careful.
It was about 2 1/2 hours before first dose of anti venom. I'm with her now. She just received another IV bag full. This makes a total of 4 bags or 16 doses of Crofab

Moochie,

Please relay my best to Lina. For what it's worth, tell her that Loma Linda is considered to be the best venom ER on the west coast. I will keep her in my prayers.

Wow, I hope she comes through ok...scary stuff, I always tell everyone when camping or 4 wheeling around in the hills, desert wherever it may be to wear boots all then time not sandals you never know what could happen, in this case a snakebite. All sorts of nasty thing happen when you wear sandals where boots should be worn...just sayin......hope she has a speedy recovery

Thank you Fred, just got home a little while ago. Depending on how she responds to the latest dose of anti venom will determine when Lina gets to come home. Her platelet count was still dropping and this will hopefully stop it. Her leg is less swollen and she is starting to walk a little bit.

Her low blood platelet count is a problem because it harms the clotting ability of the blood. This can even cause internal bleeding.

Her spirits are good and she is feeling OK.

This young lady was lucky you guy's were able to get her out of there as fast as you did. Rattlers are no joke. It's unfortunate this has happened.

Cool Boots and Books

1. For those of you looking for snake proof boots, there are several sources. I own two different types which I personally use:
(A) Cabela's carries several brands in the $150 to $200 range. The also carry
snake proof over pants and gaiters. They are all made of Gore Tex and Kevlar. As you might expect the boots come up to your knees, are heavy and hot. But they work. cabela's.com
(B) Gokey Footwear by Orvis. These are hand made to your exact specs and are
made of heavy, and I mean heavy, leather. Again, they come up to your knees and are very hot. (and I don't mean "cool," man) These boots come with a 100% lifetime guarantee. They are hand made in Tipton, MO. They cost $500 to $600. ORVIS.COM

2. If I were king, and we are all lucky that I'm not, I would require that all Jeeps sold in SoCal be delivered with a copy of the following book on the dashboard.
"Rattlesnakes. Their habits, life histories & influence on mankind" by
Laurence M. Klauber (Abridged Edition) ISBN 0-520-04039-2. Get it at your local library or Amazon.com. Retail about $17. Used under $10. For the past 10 years I have made it a tradition to read several sections of this book between Christmas and New Years. It never goes out of style.
