It's a little warm for the So Cal area mountains and deserts at the moment, I'd say starting around the October time frame is your best bet. If you are itching to go now, there are some good trails around Big Bear Mtn. As for me, I'm going to Nor Cal (Lake Tahoe area) in mid Sept for a few weeks

You could put up a post asking if someone is willing to show you the way to pancake rock or table mountain. They are both trails you can do stock and are not out at the desert. Google them.
