Smile SoCal HAMS

Passed my Technician test this morning in Carlsbad. I would like to hear/see what HAM set-ups you are running in your JKs. I don't think this will be of general interest so maybe PMs may be the best way to respond. Thanks

Congratulations. I passed m Tech test yesterday in Cypress! Wired my new Icom 208H last night. Can't went to see if the transmitter works! It receives great.

BTW it is of interest to others. I first saw pics of a 208 with the remote face on this forum. Got me to go buy it.

I always thought it would be a good idea, and pretty cool, to get into ham radio, but have never taken the time to look into it seriously. Any suggestions on where to begin?

Roxster,

Please go to the "Electrical, Lighting & Sound Systems" section of the board and read the answer I just sent to "goldTR8." It can be found as the last entry in a tread entitled "10M radio plus 11M CB mod." If you have any questions, please send me a PM.

I forgot to add, go on line and look up Orange County, CA, Ham Clubs. There's most likely one in Irvine. Contact them. They will be able to provide you with a schedule of test dates and locations, plus provide other useful information.

I bought the ARRL technician study guide from Barnes and Noble. Started studying Wed night and took the test Saturday. The test isn't all that hard. You could probably just study the questions online at sites like qrz.com but reading the study guide will give you a bit more info. Jump on the Arrl.org website there's a gang of information there including test dates and study guide info.

I really got motivated two weeks ago when we were trying to run Main Divide and some clowns up there were running amps on the CB channels that all but stopped us from communicating on the CB channels. Plus, the guys in San Felipe noramally run HAM setups so they can talk to the remote campos.

That's kind of cool. I might just look into it as well.

The test cost $15. I think it will be a good investment. The fist time i get stuck in the middle of nowhere and can hit a repeater and get help it will be worth it's weight in gold.
