Default Tapping threads help in IE

Have a 50" light bar I was installing on windshield. The brackets were slightly wider than the bar so I was using a spacer. It wasn't snugging up enough to keep it level. I was told by the manufacturer to snug it down tight. Well, now the threads are stripped on the light.

Anyone around riverside area (or close to it) with experience tapping? Its an aluminum housing. It was a 6mm bolt I think. I might also drill/tap a second hole to keep light level without having to tighten it so much. Any input would be appreciated. Any help will be compensated. Thanks all!!

Should have got smaller bolts, I know which light your talking about. I can help but im in fallbrook. Ironically we are helping someone else (Ez-e) fix his, which has done the same thing. You will have to retap to 2 sizes larger, but you will more than likely crack the metal and it will be a useless light after that. You will need to get new end caps. Pm me if you have questions.

Smaller bolts? They're the bolts that came with it. I assume you mean shorter. They didn't bottom out. I just was cranking too hard trying to keep light from turning.

It's just cheap knock off so worst case scenario I'm not out TOO much. Fallbrook isn't too far. I'll let ya know if nothing closer comes up. Thanks a bunch!!

Sounds like you need to put a helicoil in it. You drill out the hole slightly larger, tap it, screw in the helicoil with the special tool, knock out the tab, and should be stronger than original. Some kits even come with all you need. Drill bit, tap, inserts, and special tool. You need to get the proper kit for the size bolt your using. Available at most auto parts or hardware stores. Let me know if you need help today. I'm up by Beaumont. Mark.
