Well, I definitely have to get some badge of honor for this...
Those of you whom I've wheeled with know that I'm not exactly the most CMF out there, usually taking the conservative lines and not doing anything too crazy...
I've been hearing a clunking noise from my front end at low speeds the last couple of times I went wheeling, but after the last run with RiggerMike, it got louder. I drove home without incident last Sunday and parked the Jeep until this morning, when I decided to take it to the dealer to fix. Upon trying to negotiate the first turn, the Jeep lurched to an abrupt halt. I got outside, turned the steering wheel, and the tires didn't turn...not good.
As far as I know, I'm the first guy on the forum to shatter the front axle completely through the entire assembly and wipe out the steering dampener. Oh, both my differentials are also leaking too.
Looking at the $1000 + repair bill, I was able to negotiate. When I get my Jeep back, I'll have a new axle and steering dampener, and the differentials will be fixed. Oh yeah, they are also going to throw a 4" lift with 37 inch tires and larger wheels too.

Sorry to hear about your broken axle! What axle was it? At least your getting a lift out of the deal! I wasn't there but TrailBud broke a Dana 44 housing on the Anza Borrego trip about two months ago. A pic of it.....

The lift isn't included in the $1000 - they gave me a "deal" on the lift.
RiggerMike, I think it was somewhat broken before I left, as the clunking sound was around beforehand - I think Sunday's run just polished it off.

I just heard that you broke your axle too. Did you have impact damage at the area that broke? I didn't have any impact damage so my dealer did the repair under warrenty.
Mine broke on the passinger side of the diff. Where did yours crack?

The service manager said there was extensive underbody damage, so it wasn't covered under warranty...I asked the dealer to keep the old parts so I will try to take a pic of the broken axle when I go to pick it up. No ETA yet - the axle had to come from Frisco, so it could be a week...
