Default Moving to Southern Louisiana

Got a new job that is requires me to relocate. I'm moving from PA to the Youngsville area. Does anyone have any helpful hints to help me make this transition? Any places I should try to avoid or places I should try to be around? Any information will help. Thanks guys.

That's too funny! I live in Youngsville, but am working in PA. What do you need to know? Need any tips on housing, shopping, food? Who are you going to work for?

Yeah, housing would be great, especially areas to try to live in and areas to stay away from. I'm working for oil field service company.

As far as housing, are you looking to buy, rent, lease? There are quite a few new developments in the area, property value has skyrocketed in the past 10 years or so. Youngsville itself is a pretty quiet town, but it's part of Lafayette Parish which has some bad spots. Give me an idea of a budget and I will help you the best I can. I will tell you this, make sure you have a good A/C, it gets a little steamy at home

I'm planning on renting at first just to make sure another move isn't in the near future. So what areas are "bad" in Lafayette? Seems like there's not to many rental properties in Youngsville, at least reasonable 1 Bdrm. Probably going have to venture the search into Lafayette.

Some of the inner city areas are not the greatest, try to stay in the 70508, 70592, 70506 areas if you can. Lafayette has tons to offer as far as shopping, food, entertainment, etc. traffic kinda sucks sometimes. The oil and gas industry rules there so I would think no matter what you should be able to find steady employment (especially if you are willing to work offshore), granted you have a job, but just saying. What service company is it, cause if its near hwy 90, you may want to look into the Cade, new Iberia area, or in vermilion parish, things tend to be more reasonable there.

These seem decent, and it's right in the middle of Youngsville. Nice area.

What kind of oil field service will you be doing? Do you mind if I ask which company?

Depending on where your work is located I'd be careful as to where you move. I work for Stone Energy off Kaliste Saloon (sp?) in Lafayette and was working from the office for a few months. They had me staying in a hotel 1 mile away and it would regularly take 10-15 minutes. Traffic in Lafayette can be a nightmare. The Youngsville/Abbeville area seems to be a nicer area but I'm sure they have their bad parts.
