The little bit of rust was as described - on the bottom vertical piece that fits inside the top vertical tube. I just sanded it a little and sprayed some black rustoleum on it. I don't expect to have any issues.
Of course now my wife is saying she'd like to see some lights up there, but then how will I carry the canoe???!!!

I picked up one of these scratch and dent light bars for the same reason. This bar is SOLID and while I haven't put my canoe up there yet, I have no doubt whatsoever that it would hold 2 canoes if you could stack them :-)
