08 Used Oil analysis
Thought some would be interested in the UOA of my Wrangler. Pretty much self explanatory. This shows the factory fill at 948 miles and the first oil change with Motorcraft 5w-20. I used the MC FL-400S oil filter. I want to keep an eye on the protection afforded by the factory recommended thin 5w-20 oil in extreme conditions.
Hey, that looks great. Since it looks like you started from day one, you have a good benchmark. Wish I would have done that, but hind sight is 20/20.
Please post the cost and a link. I'd like to jump on the band wagon, and I'm sure there are a few others. I've already changed the oil at least 3 times using Mobil1 5/20 with mobil1 filter and would like to have it checked if the cost is not that high. I'm assuming the main thing they are talking about is silicone, vice silicoon, and it stand to reason that may be high.
Looks like the copper, molybdenum, and zinc are a bit higher than average, but that's probably from materials in a new engine build. Wonder where the high calcuim reading is coming from, unless that's what they're talking about with the air filter. Maybe some water based pollutants. Are you running the stock air filter? That is if I'm readin this thik correctly.
At any rate, the cost and link would be great.

They will send a free sample kit. You take the sample and send it in with payment. I think it cost me $22.50.
My engine and intake is stock. Readings can be all over the map in a new engine. Moly, calcium and zinc are oil additives. The lab believes the copper is from copper bushings wearing in (cam bearings?). Silicon can be dirt ingestion or crap from casting, seals, etc. Everything is going the right direction. My next sample should be better.

cb,
Would like to stay in touch. Since you are using stock oil and stock filter, and I Mobil1 with Mobil1 filter, would like to stay in touch and compare, just to see if the added cost of the synthetic oil and filter is worth the cost. My kit should be here in a week or so, and another week or so for results. We can then compare, and see. So if any are interested. Stay Tuned. This will be a good comparison, since the testing facility is the same. The JK's are pretty close to the same year, yet the oils and filters are different.
Stay Tuned.
Maybe once we compare, a sticky is in order.

When you do get the results back from the Mobil 1, please post them in this same thread. It will be nice to be able to easily compare the two.
Which Mobil 1 bottle are you using? Silver cap or gold cap?

I'm using the silver cap, 5/20, and please don't bring up this is not true synthetic, but rather some type of dino blend. The (silver cap), and (gold cap), are both fully synthetic (PAO) base stocks, that I have already adressed in another thread, and provided information and tables as of March 2006. that all Mobil1 synthetic engine oils are group IV base stocks. The only diference is the chemicals added, such as ash, zinc and so forth to provide a longer lasting oil with less chance of breakdown, which in my opinion after much research since 1996, is nothing more than a ploy to entice the customer that he or she can run the (gold cap) oil for 15K miles vice 5K (silver cap) miles.
I am looking forward to a comparison of oils used in pretty much the same vehicle, but with a few thousand miles diference in engine wear from the same lab. I will be intersested in seeing the first testing, seeing that I have about 11K miles on the JK and have already switched from factory to Mobil1 at 3K, and 6K and now have 11k on the JK. I will wait for the test kit before changing the oil, and will give the reading of how many miles from 6K it was tested.
This is great, and people should stay tuned for results.

I sure will.

We could have some good comparisons, with testing by the same lab.
I've been thinking about this, and this would be a great comparison for any oil you use. So many times has this issue come up. This is our chance to really document brands of oils. There are many many posts bragging up this oil and that oil, and which one is better, but right here we have the chance to see what is real, provided we all use the same testing lab. And the cost is just $22.50 a sample. We could compare what we use, and after probably just a year, maybe 2, we could have running results posted in which we could compare what we are spending out money on.
At least 2 of us now are on the wagon. Who else will climb on.
Moderators, once this gets going, you gota make it a sticky.
Thanks cb for the start.

I need to get off my rear and send in a sample as well..
