I don't want to get into a debate, I am asking from an offroading perspective what are the pro cons for each.

You're basically looking at break over angle, turning radius, wheelbase stability, and storage.

 

I agree with the above statement. I go jeeping with both 2 and 4 doors, I have a 4 door and the only real difference that I can tell as far as a set back for the four door is we have to make more three point turns on tight trails and I center hang easier. However, I am able to go everywhere the two doors go.

A two door can turn tighter. Depending on the shape of terrain, the wheel base may prevent or may cause high-centering in either vehicle, but usually the advantage goes to the two door. Going up and down steep hills the four door is more stable--far less susceptible to forward/rearward rolls. On washboard roads, the four door is less susceptible to getting "sideways", especially at faster speeds. But neither vehicle likes those faster speeds on washboard roads thanks to solid axles.

 

My wifes 2door Rubicon with 3" lift & 33" tires can go some amazing places. I'm working on a 4 door Rubicon right now and will need 35" tires on the same lift to keep up. The 4 door is long at 115" wheelbase compared to a 95" wheelbase. I think there is a 5" difference on high centering. One of the reasons the LJ is so popular is the wheelbase is in between the two at 106 -108" which is pretty ideal.

 

I have a 2 dr and wouldn't have it any other way. The 4 dr guys I wheel with go everywhere I do but they tend to get high centered more often and have to do a lot of 3 point turns on the tight trails.

Steep inclines or declines the 4 dr have the advantage over the 2 dr hands down. The longer wheelbase definitely feels more stable and if you want to run really large tires I would choose a 4 dr over a 2 dr.

 

I agree .... After doing Moab I'll stay with my 4 door 37's and 4" lift .... the 2 door in our group was scary to watch at times lol
But really depends on what type of trails you're into.

I have had both and now have a 4dr.

Why? I can take the Grandchildren, their Mom, tents, sleeping bags, cooler, grill, food, tool kit, spare parts, and the dog (both theirs and mine) and still have room.

That is really the reason I sold my 2dr and bought this one.

 

I have wheeled an 02 tj built out and now my jkur and the 4 door is better in all places (in my opinion) except for two things u-turns and belly clearance. Hill climbs and descents are really were the 4 doors do great as long as you don't belly out at the top... One large plus in the extra room to put your sh*t on long wheeling trips. Overall I would chose the 4 door any day even to know turning around is a pain in the rear.
