2000 miles and already have problems
this was due to the material the bushing was made out of. it was almost like a chewed up pencil eraser nothing was forced, it went right into 4wd, no grind, no resistance but when i went to put it back in 2wd it was just like a limp dick lol
One issue i have noticed that it could be is the interior part of the cable comes out of the sheath enough it is allowed to kick to the side a little bit instead of making a linear push or pull, causing the end to have uneven pressure on the bushing causing it to split or allowing it to pop off of the selector arm shaft on the transfer case.
when i get the new bushing i will post the part number and a picture of it, as well as a permanant viable fix if i come up with one.

There are A LOT of threads on here about shifting techniques, quoting of manuals, tranny in neutral, moving, not moving, anticipating drive wheel position, etc......the consensus seems to be 3 things - 1) Never force it, 2) Tranny in neutral (maybe rolling slowly - less than 3 mph - or rocking it slowly to align gears), 3) These parts are crap and can break......
That said, I have not yet seen a good fix in any thread. Some guys suggest carrying spare parts, but in reality and if need be, you can crawl under the Jeep and manually shift the transfer case back to the drive wheel combo you want.
Its not a fix....but it ain't stranded or walking either.....

Bottom line: Learn how to use it within it's limits and you'll be much better off.
FWIW, I have broken mine too. I was forcing it. Don't do it.
The bright side is the fix can be achieved with a pair of zip ties.
Mines always been a biatch to shift out of 4low but never broken anything. I always drive forward, shift into neutral, and while still moving shift out of 4lo. and if you shift from 4hi to 2hi it might no actually pop out unless your moving. make sure its out of four before getting on the road.
I had mine (07 X) since May of 2007 and it has been in the shop over six months of the time. But I did buy this thing as the first year it comes out like a dumb a$$. But the good news is since 08/08 the JEEP has not been in the shop. It takes alot of patience and love for the JEEP. Just remember that you must (Just Empty EVERY Pocket) cause you will spend alot of money on this vehicle. And most of the repairs the stealership will tell you "since you placed bigger tires, new exhaust, lift kit, new gears, bumpers, and etc that part is not under warranty.
But just place a tow strap to the service managers vehicle and pull it down the street.
Cause that is what most deserve

I've never had a problem with mine yet either. I shift moving or stopped. Whatever I need to do. I guess I've been lucky. I have noticed that my 4dr is a lot easier to get into 4lo than the 2dr. And actually any other Jeep I've ever owned. I guess that is random luck.
