2008 Thermostat Replacement
Thanks resharp! I still plan on replacing the upper and lower hose since I have them already as a spare, along with a coolant flush. At that point for the extra $40 I would also do the thermostat and housing. Just was curious if I should do the sending unit for good measure also. Plan to leave it alone for now for sure.
I just pulled up to see where yall's was on a 3.8L. Looks like that thing sits vertical in an easily accessible location; much more convenient than on the 3.6L. That being the case, I'd definitely go with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" cuz it looks like a 5 min job if it ever does start throwing code on you.
I own a shop alus I own an 08 Rubicon, and have changed many. People seem to want to change the sensor when the thermostat fails. To me it's foolish to take out a sensor that's reading correctly. At least the 3.8 is easier than the 3.6 sensor down on the block.
Why. If your sensor works then it has 100% chance of working. If you buy a brand new one you aren't getting a 100% chance. And unlike an internal part I may change for preventative maintenance...the sensor is right or in the open and easy to change. Takes 10 minutes. The old one you have will likely be plastic from the factory. The new ones from Mopar will be brass. Its easiest to take off the throttle body 4 bolts and clean it while it's off.

If just changing the thermostat or housing i pull the throttle body and clean it up too. One could change the thermostat without pulling the throttle body maybe. But it's probably just as fast to pull it for better access. Plus you can clean up the butterfly with some throttle body cleaner
Yeah. I was talking about the sensor.
