Default 2009 Jeep won't turn over, cranks but won't start sometimes

Hi, new here...I am having an issue with my 2009 Sahara unlimited...stock...sometimes...only sometimes...when I turn the key the engine cranks but does not turn over. When I let go of the key the engine continues to crank for a few seconds but the jeep does not start. I have had it in the shop..where of course it will not do it...My mechanic has tried several things but it still does it. The fuel pump is fine, I do not think it has anything to do with the key because it does it with the automatic start also. The starter is fine, I have 220,000 mile on this jeep and love it but I don't want to get stranded on the beach...anyone have similar problems? I feel like taking it back to the mechanic is just going to be a...well I can try this..waste of money..

thanks in advance

Dawn

It has a remote start? I assume that is an aftermarket installation. Sometimes the remote start can do weird things. Strange that is keeps cranking after turning off the key. I'd consider disconnecting the remote start as see if there's any improvement.
I had aftermarket remote start professionally installed in my wife's BMW. Sometimes it seems to have a mind of it own. The logic in the remote start needs to communicate with the various alarms and safety features built into the vehicle computer. I can see problems occurring if their is a fault in the remote start.
Welcome to the forum.

He lets go of the key. That is normal behavior for a JK with an automatic transmission. It's called TipStart. It will crank until it starts, or about 10 seconds if it doesn't start.

Yes that is what I have read. Which led me to try to start it with the automatic start because they advised it may be the TipStart has an issue but since it does the same thing with the autostart I am not sure what to try next. I am going to disconnect the battery as I was told this may reset the computer then I think there Powe train computer module that I can change out but thats alot of money for a try....but I am not getting an engine light and it is not throwing any codes.

Yes, try the battery reset.
The WCM has quite a bit of authority over the starting, running, and shutting off of the JK.
It can be the cause of no crank, crank but no start, and failure to turn off when the key is removed.

Not saying that is your problem. It's something to keep in mind as you work through this issue.

WCM = Wireless Control Module. It's where the steering column meets the dash board.
