Default 2009 jku

Ok I am new to the jeep thing and I love it. I have a 2012 with the 3.6 engine no problems so far. I might be buying a 2009 JKU tomorrow for the wife. How is that year model. Any problems.

Common issues:

The 4 speed auto trans is not the greatest. Some complain the torque converter doesn't lock up at the right time you need it. Turning the O.D. Helps.

Some complaints of having Torque converter shudder. Dealer flash sometimes doesn't help.

For auto equipped trans, they tend to overheat when offroading. Installing aftermarket cooler seems to help.

Some say the 3.8 engine is underpowered even in stock form.

There have been cases of Jeeps catching on fire possibly due to the trans fluid overheating and spilling out of the dipstick. Chrysler claims its the design of the old skid plate. Debris gets stuck in there which causes it to burn. They redesigned the skid plate. Other miscl electrical issues/shorts that may also lead to the burning..

Oil burning issue. In order to satisfy CAFE standards in mpg, Chrysler filled the 3.8 engines with 5w-20 which affected some jeeps wherein they burn a lot of oil. Owners had to make sure to top off the oil as to not let it run dry. If neglected it caused engine damage requiring a rebuild or a new engine. Some owners had their engine seize or knock as little as 60k miles.

For manual trans some issues with the clutch, throw out bearing, popping out of gear...

Those are what I can remember on top of my head...

Well I just took it for a test drive. I don't think i will be buying it. It dose not ride level I think a spacer is broken on the passenger side. It has a weird smell under the hood. The top has two holes in it and it leaks.
