2011 2dr 6spd Noisy Engine!
I know, I know...Not another thread on this....
I just purchased a brand new, 2011 Sport 2 door, 6 speed. Having previousley owned a 2008 2 door auto, I am aware of the JK's quirks. They're not quiet by any means. They make noises, accelerate like a turtle, burn a little oil sometimes and most of all, behave nothing like a sports car. First impressions during the test drive were great. I did notice it was a little noisy but I thought it was the clutch... (being used to the previous automatic) Now, the more I drive it, the more I catch on to the engine noise. It sounds like a sewing machine! Or even like cards in a bicycle wheel. I plan on taking it back to the dealer but I'm sure they'll dismiss it as a normal sound. I would be fine with that. The thing runs like a stepped on cat. No problems at all. I just want to make sure I'm not blowing this out of proportion. I know these engines have noisey lifters and valves but should I be able to here them that well at 70 mph? Its as loud or louder than the wind noise from the soft top! The only reason I ask is because my 2008 did NOT make this sound. It ticked a little but nothing like this 2011. Let me know if any of you are experiencing the same things. Thanks for your time and wave dammit!

Im not exactly sure how accurate this is, but prior to purchasing my JK a month ago I had a 1500 Silverado and it made the card in the spokes sound when idling and more so when I would accelerate. It was loud and especially when I pushed the pedal down, I narrowed it down to be a valve that needed to be replaced. I did not have any power loss or engine lights or anything. As far as my JK goes, I have no similar sounds to report. I know this isn't a very informing post but hopefully it can help is some way.
Yeah, the whirring, sewing-machine noise heard at idle with the hood open is the injectors. All injectors tick to some extent but the JK's are known to be pretty noticable, though at 70MPH I don't think so. Lifters have a louder, more metallic clank to them and the sound of a shot crank bearing is unmistakeable. I do believe from reading posts here that there was an issue with the bolts on the rocker arms causing clearance issues and assaciated tappet noise which could affect low mileage or even brand new motors.

I really hope its nothing that major. I would imagine a stuck valve or a faulty crank bearing would be detrimental to the jeeps performance. I would assume you would notice some kind of sluggishness or poor milage right? Thats why its so confusing to me. It runs just fine. Its just really loud.
Driving home from work today, I pushed in the clutch and let off the gas and coasted for about 1000 feet. The noise dissapeared while coasting. It only makes the noise when i'm giving it gas.

im not impressed one bit cheap undercoating lots of surface rust leaky soft top noisey motor popping out of gears , i mean come on 23 ,000 and you leave the dealership and start finding all this crap out ! bring it in they just say its a jeep thing !!!!

My '10 engine is fairly quiet at 14k on the odometer. Rear/four wheel drive manual transmissions are noisey by nature, especially truck transmissions like ours. In most cases, just by replacing the shifter knob quiets them down because the knob acts like a audio speaker and amplifies the normal noises. Ive actually been debating on stuffing the hollow stock plastic knob with cotton to surpress the noise some.

Given those parameters, a cracked manifold sounds more likely. A had an old car with a worn valve seat (not sure if it was intake or exhaust valve) that would only make the tapping noise when I accelerated (and it got louder the more throttle I gave it, independent of RPM) and disappeared when I eased off the gas and coasted, and didn't have any affect on the motor's performance whatsoever (a burnt or stuck valve however will usually result in a miss and cause a loss in performance and make the motor run very rough). Thing is it was a smallblock V8 with iron heads and 200K miles on it; alloy heads designed to run on unleaded have hardened valve seats and shouldn't be showing wear so soon.

Hearing and acting the same on mine too, I took mine back to the dealer with a little less than a 100 miles on it was told that no issues were found - performing as normal. Could just be how these run, does not sound normal to me.
I was thinking of taking it in again or trying another dealer and going on a test drive with the tech, I have not had the time to investigate myself .(really why should I it's under warrenty) If your dealer finds anything please share .

I have plans to get it to the dealer around Thursday or Friday. I will keep you all posted on the outcome. Sadly, I'm beginning to think that this noise might actually be normal. I put a full tank of 93 octane in it his morning. It made no difference at all. I have 1600 miles now and it's done it since day 1 with no sign of stopping.
