Turns out there was an issue with the original plastic type header and they came out with a new metal one ($95) from the dealer...you may or may not need to replace it.
But yes...old JKU top on 2012 fits as long as you get all the pieces with it.

A 2012 soft top will fit an older model.. Like others said as long as you get the other hardware. IE door surrounds, the 2012 is a different style top that has a wire and springs in the top to create tension. It does not have the plastic tabs that tuck into the surrounds like the older style. On the bright side the 2012 top is the first wrangler soft top I've had that does not leak.....
