373 vs 410 gears pros and cons
I am looking at new jeeps argh!!! and I test drove the new recon today with 373 gears and then a rubicon with 410 gears It seemed like there was more power available with the 410 but just barely ? seat of the pants feel ... so is there any advantage to a 373 gear set. what if I plan to goto a lightly larger tire say a 315 70 17 ? and how about for towing?
I als was wondering if I can squeeze 315 in there with out a lift but just spacers? what do you think?

I have 373 with stock tire size on my 2012. I tow a pretty big trailer. I've actually towed as high as 5000 pounds. Mine is a manual transmission. I wish I had 410 rear. Here's why: when towing a heavy, boxy trailer, I like to go around 65mph. At that speed, the rpms don't quite have enough power to use 6th gear. If I drive 70+ mph, I do keep the rpms high enough in 6th gear to maintain speed. However, I don't want to drive 70+ while towing, therefore I leave it in 5th gear. If I had the 410's, then I likely would be able to use 6th gear for highway towing.
There's only 10% difference in final drive ratio between the two. All things equal, go with the larger, but if the other jeep is otherwise a better deal, I'd reduce the importance of only 10% difference in gearing.
Totally agree. Pick the Jeep you like best and don't base your decision on gears alone. Neither 3.73 or 4.10 are preferable with 35s so you'll be looking at a gear change to at least 4.56 anyway.

there are no cons in getting 4.10's unless you plan to regearing to 4.56 or 4.88 or even numerically higher which would make them a waste of money then. While there may only be 10% difference in 3.73 and 4.10's on the interstate or in hilly two lane driving if you have an automatic tranny your transmission will do a lot less downshifting on little hills with the 4.10's.
