6 spd grinding noise
I've read through the forums in search of an answer to my problem. I have an '07 with the manual transmission and each time I either get into low revs or high revs (close to 3k) I hear this kind of grinding noise. As if the disks were rubbing against each other. I don't know if this is clutch related or if I should change my fluid but I certainly feel like this is DC's job and not mine!
Any pointers?

Can you please provide more information about this sound? Can you feel it in the pedal? Did you recently take it through some water or go off road? Also, can you recreate it while stopped or do you have to be moving? If you can, get some one in the seat to push the gas pedal down and see if you can locate the sound from outside. I once had the heat shield for the Catalytic Converter come loose and it sounded like it was coming from the clutch area. (They were essentially side by side.)
I cannot be made without having the Jeep in motion. I went offroad maybe 2 weeks ago but cannot remember if the sound was present before. I'll check the cat shield before sending it to the dealer Monday.
I've been getting unusual gear noise from the start as well, especially in 4th gear. Took a test ride with a Jeep tech and he didn't feel it was a problem. Still, I don't like it.
Thinking about trying some Royal Purple or Redline synthetic fluid real soon in the transmission and diffs since I now have over 10K on the rig.

my GF's father is a Jeep tech.. Now I dont have my Jeep yet, but since the JK's came out he has been complaining about people complaining about noise in the 6sp gearbox.. He recently (about 1 month ago) went to a Chrysler tech school upstate NY about it.. And they explained to him the sounds and made the entire class get into a bunch of brand new JK's and MOST of them were doing it..
All Chrysler could tell him is that it is a "normal" sound and nothing else.. He sorta came to his own conclusion that its the odd way these transmissions are designed (all gears stuffed towards rear of transmission houseing) is what might be causing it..
Then again your noise may or may not be what he was talking about, he said you can also hear it when the Jeep is at idle in neutral as long as the radio and heat/ac is off, and your foot is not on the clutch..
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the answers,
From what the last poster was saying, this noise that DCX considers as normal isn't the one I'm having trouble with. The Jeep won't grind if its at idle, only when shifting gears either on an incline or at low revs. It seems to me like a burnt clutch.
